Eastern Tech, Kenwood and Chesapeake all hold graduations this week.
The Essex-Middle River area will be home to several hundred more high school graduates as Kenwood, Eastern Tech and Chesapeake hold commencement ceremonies this week. Kenwood kicks off graduation week beginning at 4 p.m. June 4 at CCBC Essex. Eastern Tech seniors will then receive their diplomas when that ceremony begins at 4 p.m. June 5. Shortly thereafter, Chespeake will hold its graduation ceremony at 7 p.m. June 5. Both of those graduations will also take place at CCBC Essex. Congratulations to all graduates and their families! Kennedy Akwo, along with Pikesville's Stephanie Honig, were this year's recipients of the Mildred Murray All-Academic Scholar Athlete awards and scholarships.
A Chesapeake High School senior was one of two student-athletes honored with a prestegious award this week. Kennedy Akwo, along with Pikesville's Stephanie Honig, were this year's recipients of the Mildred Murray All-Academic Scholar Athlete awards and scholarships. The recipients received their awards at a ceremony May 29 from Murray and Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston, according to a news release. Akwo, who competed in indoor and outdoor track and field and soccer at Chesapeake, ranked ninth in a class of 261 and has an unweighted 3.67 GPA. . A National Honor Society member who earned All-Academic team honors in the county, will attend Stevenson University, the release continued. Honig ranked first in her class of 216 and had a 4.0 …

The Mavericks and Bayhawks earned a first-round bye in the regional playoffs.
Eastern Tech and Chesapeake both earned top seeds in their respective regions. Eastern Tech, which will play Franklin in the Baltimore County championships Thursday at CCBC Catonsville, earned the top seed in the Class 3A North region. The Mavericks will host the winner of Aberdeen and Patapsco on Monday in a regional quarterfinal game. Chesapeake is the top-seeded team in the Class 2A North region and will host the winner of Randallstown and Douglass on Monday. Also, Kenwood is the eighth seed in the Class 4A North region and will host Blake in an opening round game on Thursday. Kenwood, Eastern Tech have opening-round games set for Wednesday while Chesapeake has a bye into the regional quarterfinals.
Kenwood and Eastern Tech kick off their respective postseasons on Wednesday in opening round regional playoff games. Kenwood (6-8) is the 11th seed in the Class 4A/3A South region and will play at Parkville. Eastern Tech is the ninth seed in the Class 3A/2A North region and will play at 3:30 p.m. at Aberdeen. Chesapeake is the seventh seed in the Class 2A/1A North region and will play Western Tech at 4 p.m. Thursday at Arbutus Middle School. The Mavericks look to build on last weekend's sixth place finish in the Class 4A/3A North regional tournament.
Eastern Tech had four wrestlers qualify for this week’s Class 4A/3A state tournament at the University of Maryland after each placed in the top four in this past weekend’s regional championships. Stephen Beam (138 pounds) led this group after he was the Mavericks lone individual winner. Also qualifying for the state tourney for Eastern Tech were Dustin Shackleford (second place, 145), Ilya Usik (third, 152) and Nathaniel Gale (fourth, 170). Also, Mitchell Burns placed fifth at 195 pounds for the Mavericks. Kenwood, Eastern Tech and Chesapeake find out where they are seeded in the upcoming MPSSAA regional playoffs.
With the regular season complete, Essex's three high schools are now preparing for postseason play. On the boys side, Kenwood is hoping to ride a 17-5 record to a deep run in the Class 4A playoffs. The Bluebirds, who closed the regualr season Thursday with a 72-47 win over Towson, is the fourth seed in the 4A North and will host the winner of Paint Branch and Dulaney on Feb. 28 in a quarterfinal game. The Mavericks had four wrestlers place in the top four and finished with 133 points in the 23-team field over the weekend.
Eastesrn Tech finished tops among the Essex-Middle River schools in this past weekend’s Overlea Invitational Wrestling Tournament. The Mavericks finished in sixth place with 133 team points, while Kenwood placed 13th with 64 points while Chesapeake finished in last place with 16 team points in the 23-team field. Perry Hall won the overall team title with 186.5 points. Among the highlights for Eastern Tech, Stephen Beam won the individual title at 138 pounds while Sam Caravello (113) and Dustin Shackleford (145) took fourth and Nate Gale (170) placed third. “We had some wrestlers do really well..." The Mavericks dominate Kenwood, Mount Carmel in Eastside Challenge showdown.
Eastern Tech showed off its dominance over felllow Essex schools Kenwood and Mount Carmel Thursday night as the Mavericks swept a tri-meet. The Mavericks (9-3) started off the night with a 63-9 victory over Mount Carmel before taking care of host-Kenwood, 52-18. The matches are part of the annual Eastside Challege, a year-long competition between the four Essex high schools: Mount Carmel, Eastern Tech, Chesapeake and Kenwood. Eastern Tech next competes on Saturday at the Overlea Invitational. After that, the Mavericks host Milford Mill at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for their senior night celebration before closing out the regular season Thursday at Mount Hebron. The Bluebirds continue their strong start to the season as both the boys and girls teams defeated the Bayhawks on Wednesday night in Essex.
Kenwood's boys basketball team reeled off its eighth straight win with a 67-50 victory over visiting Chesapeake on Wednesday night in Essex. Senior guard Travis Jenkins scored 15 points to go along with 5 steals and 4 assists for Kenwood (8-1). Senior forward Jonathan Richardson contributed 8 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks while junior forward Keith Moody had 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks and 4 steals in the win. Other contributors for Kenwood included junior guard Dana Johns, who had 8 points and 4 assists, and sophomore forward Keith Moody with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks and 4 steals.
