County Announces Settlements In 3 Federal Disability Lawsuits

Two former firefighters and a police officer could return to light duty as a result of the agreement.

Baltimore County officials said Thursday that they have settled three disability lawsuits with two firefighters and a police officer. "These settlements honor these employees for their past service while also ensuring that firefighters and police officers who serve the residents of Baltimore County are working in jobs that match their physical abilities for the safety of all," wrote Baltimore County Attorney Michael Field in a statement on the county's blog Thursday. "Residents of Baltimore County demand no less than this." As part of the settlement, the county does not admit any liability. In September, firefighters Donald Becker and Stanley Kuklinski and police Lt. Michael Lauenstein field lawsuits seeking $2.3 million in damages and …

Essex Gardeners! Yard Waste Pickup to Resume April 1

Baltimore County officials provide instructions for the collection of lawn materials.

Essex and Middle River gardeners and spring yard cleaners will no doubt be happy with the news that yard waste collection will resume for the season beginning April 1. Yard materials will be picked up for recycling (separately from trash) for residents who have designated "Y" days on their recycling schedules, according to county officials. Residents who do not have designated "Y" days on their recycling schedules may put their yard materials out on their regular trash days for collection. There is no limit to the number of bags a resident can set out for collection; however, the collector may not pick them all up on the same date. If some bags are not picked up, residents are encouraged to leave them at curbside until they are picked up. …

Essex SkyPark Secures 99-Year Lease with Baltimore County

The Essex SkyPark Association will pay $200,000 for the long-term lease agreement.

Essex Patch received the following letter from Ron Lane, secretary of the Essex SkyPark Association: "Essex SkyPark Association is pleased to announce that we have secured a 99-year lease with Baltimore County for the operation of Essex SkyPark airport. Over this past year, we have worked to accomplish three goals: First, secure a long-term lease for the airport; second, obtain a historical designation; and third, obtain IRS nonprofit status. All three were successfully completed by March 15, 2013. Our agreement for the 99-year lease required Essex SkyPark Association to pay $200,000 to Baltimore County upon signing the lease. Under the leadership of Brian Dolan, we were successful in raising a $200,000 through a bond drive to be paid back…

Sen. Stone surely deserves kudos, but making the airport historic likely did nothing to secure them a new lease. Judging from the related stories it looks like the entire house of delegates for Balto County and Ms. Bevins deserve the credit for facilitating the meetings and getting them to negotiate. All in all, a good cause with a good result.   more ›

Bevins Focuses on Education, Business in 2013

The 6th district councilwoman talks about her legislative experiences in 2012 and plans for this year.

After a grueling year of rezoning procedures, 6th district County Councilwoman Cathy Bevins is looking ahead to taking care of simpler things in 2013. Her priorities over the next 12 months include things like air conditioning in schools and job growth and whatever else her constituents bring to her. Someone taught me a very long time ago that when someone calls you or emails you or shows up in person, what they're talking about is the most important thing in their life at that moment," the Oliver Beach Democrat said in a recent interview in her Towson office. "So what's important to that person is what's important to this office." Asked to point to her biggest successes in 2012, Bevins pointed to the simple things, like securing funds to …

Until the council becomes autonomous and stops the - count me in process - on various community and county issues, each member faces the possibility of strong challengers. The problem is many of our elected officials don't see the writing on the wall and forget to involve the people they serve in the process. Councilmatic races are not as complex and the chance for change is greater. The people …   more ›
