Two former firefighters and a police officer could return to light duty as a result of the agreement.
Baltimore County officials said Thursday that they have settled three disability lawsuits with two firefighters and a police officer. "These settlements honor these employees for their past service while also ensuring that firefighters and police officers who serve the residents of Baltimore County are working in jobs that match their physical abilities for the safety of all," wrote Baltimore County Attorney Michael Field in a statement on the county's blog Thursday. The Sparrows Point advisory group stresses most of the jobs are at least 10 years away from reality.
A partnership created by Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, in unveiling its vision for the future of the industrial Sparows Point peninsula, says an expansion of the Port of Baltimore could bring more than 10,000 jobs back to the area. The Sparrows Point Partnership, a business advisory group established by the county after the former RG Steel mill closed in May 2012, announced its proposal at a press conference Friday. From Baltimore County officials: Baltimore County will host a joint compost bin and rain barrel sale on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale will be held on the auxiliary parking lot of The Avenue at White Marsh, 8125 Honeygo Boulevard (the parking lot is off of Town Center Drive, behind the AMC Theaters). Compost bins, valued at $100, will be sold for $35 each. Rain barrels, valued at $120, will be sold for $50 each. Both prices include tax. Cash, checks and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) will be accepted. The sale will occur rain or shine and all items will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis (while supplies last). This sale is not limited to residents of Baltimore County. Baltimore County officials provide instructions for the collection of lawn materials.
Essex and Middle River gardeners and spring yard cleaners will no doubt be happy with the news that yard waste collection will resume for the season beginning April 1. Yard materials will be picked up for recycling (separately from trash) for residents who have designated "Y" days on their recycling schedules, according to county officials. Residents who do not have designated "Y" days on their recycling schedules may put their yard materials out on their regular trash days for collection. There is no limit to the number of bags a resident can set out for collection; however, the collector may not pick them all up on the same date. If some bags are not picked up, residents are encouraged to leave them at curbside until they are picked up. …

The Essex SkyPark Association will pay $200,000 for the long-term lease agreement.
Essex Patch received the following letter from Ron Lane, secretary of the Essex SkyPark Association: "Essex SkyPark Association is pleased to announce that we have secured a 99-year lease with Baltimore County for the operation of Essex SkyPark airport. Over this past year, we have worked to accomplish three goals: First, secure a long-term lease for the airport; second, obtain a historical designation; and third, obtain IRS nonprofit status. All three were successfully completed by March 15, 2013. Our agreement for the 99-year lease required Essex SkyPark Association to pay $200,000 to Baltimore County upon signing the lease. SKW Constructors has announced it will hire as many as 100 direct employees at its Sparrows Point Shipyard and Industrial Park site. The company will also hire subcontractors that will hire additional carpenters, concrete finishers, mechanics, ironworkers, surveyors, truck drivers and laborers. Three Essex- and Middle River-area elementary schools and an expansion to the MARC station in Middle River are mentioned on Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz's list of legislative priorities in the Maryland General Assembly Session that begins this week. Sussex, Middleborough and Middlesex elementary schools are among eight county elementary schools for which Kamenetz announced requests for air conditioning projects as part of $128 million in school construction projects. On Monday, Gov. Martin O'Malley announced that his proposed budget for the next fiscal year would include $336 million for school construction projects statewide, including $25 million for air conditioning. Baltimore County's Commission for Women is looking for its next Woman of the Year and Young Woman of the Year. The 31st annual awards will honor women who make "significant, unique and lasting contributions to the community, workplace, or school to further the interest of women and families," a county press release said. Last year's Woman of the Year award went to Irene Spatafore of Dundalk. The Young Woman of the Year was Parkton resident Olivia Keithley. Nominations for 2013 can be made on the county's website.
