Back River Treatment Plant Will Be Partially Powered by Solar Energy

The addition of 4,200 solar panels are expected to generate 1,000 kilowatts of electricity per hour.

The Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant could soon significantly reduce its energy costs thanks to a newly completed array of solar panels at the Essex facility.  According to figures released by Baltimore City, the 4,200 panels —installed by Johnson Controls—will save the city $6 million over the life of the project. The city invested $4 million in the project, which was offset by a $900,000 grant from the Maryland Energy Administration. The panels are expected to generate 1,000 kilowatts of electricity per hour and are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 9,500 metric tons annually, according to a Baltimore City news release. According to the release, this is the “equivalent to planting 245,500 trees and removing …

Olszewski: 'Flush Fee' Increase Needed in State

Del. John Olszewski Jr. outlines why Maryland needed to increase the fee in order to help fund upgrades to facilities like the Back River Wastewater Treatment.

It was recently announced that the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant would be the recipient of a $10 million grant to prepare for the engineering and design of an enhanced nutrient removal upgrade.   The plant, one of the largest in Maryland, processes approximately 180,000 of the nearly 500,000 gallons of daily sewage that gets processed and released into Back River and the Chesapeake Bay.  For years, we have had the technology to reduce and remove harmful nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus—but have lacked the resources necessary to continue restoring and protecting the health of Back River and the Bay.  The final cost of such an upgrade will cost upwards of half a billion dollars. Over half of this cost ($265 million) will …

Back River Treatment Plant Receives $15M for Upgrades

The state Board of Public Works approved the funds as part of $19 million in grants for wastewater treatment plant upgrades throughout the state.

The Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant in Essex was the main beneficiary of the state Board of Public Works which on Wednesday approved more than $19 million in grants for plant upgrades. According to a news release from the Maryland Department of the Environment, the Back River plant received a $10 million Bay Restoration Fund grant and a $5 million Chesapeake Bay Water Quality Projects grant for upgrades that will eventually reduce nitrogen discharge by two-thirds, "significantly reducing the amount of nutrients discharged into Back River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay." The Board of Public Works—which consists of Gov. Martin O’Malley, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp, and Comptroller Peter Franchot—also approved a $2.9 million grant to …
