UPDATE: Vehicle Strikes Girl Near Stemmers Run Middle

A 12-year-old girl received non-life threatening injuries in Essex Friday morning.

UPDATE (Dec. 7, 1:15 p.m.)—A child was struck by a vehicle near her Essex school Friday morning.  At about 8:11 a.m., a gray Honda Pilot struck a 12-year-old girl near Stemmers Run Middle School, near the intersection of Stemmers Run Road and Eastern Avenue, according to Julia Hardgrove, a Baltimore County police spokeswoman.  The vehicle stayed on the scene after striking the girl. She received non-life threatening injuries. Emergency crews transported the girl to Johns Hopkins Children's Center by ambulance, Hardgrove said.  Police confirmed that the girl is a student at the school and that no school buses were involved in the accident.  Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Instead of adding more expensive pavement so that kids can get less exercise, breathe in more car exhaust, and not learn how to walk around safely, perhaps what the school needs is a crossing guard, a Safe Routes to School program to encourage walking and teach safety, and a traffic safety curriculum in the classroom which teaches students how to be safe pedestrians, bicyclists, and one day …   more ›
