Flanagan's Death Officially Ruled a Suicide

Officials said Flanagan last spoke to his wife at 1 a.m. on Aug. 24 and was found dead near his Sparks home later the same day.

Former Orioles pitcher and executive Mike Flanagan’s death has officially been ruled a suicide, according to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner. Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said Thursday during a news conference that Flanagan died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Flanagan was 59. Armacost said police discovered Flanagan’s body after responding to his home, located in the 15000 block of York Road near Sparks, at 4:26 p.m. Wednesday. But investigators could not positively identify him due to the extent of his injuries. Police responded to the home after a neighbor called 911 when she could not locate Flanagan. The neighbor went to check on Flanagan after his wife, Alex, called her with concerns. Mrs. …

Olesker: Mike Flanagan Was More Than a Great Pitcher

Columnist Michael Olesker reflects on the life and legacy of the former Orioles pitcher, executive who was found dead Wednesday at the age of 59.

On Oct. 6, 1991, in the final inning of the final game the Baltimore Orioles ever played at old Memorial Stadium, a chant went up from 50,700 slightly weepy fans across the big, darkening ballpark: “We want Flanagan. We want Flanagan.” And there, as if on cue, came Mike Flanagan trudging out of the bullpen, and out of everyone’s collective memories, for the last time on 33rd Street. The game was meaningless, but not the moment. The Orioles were losing to Detroit, 7 to 1, just one more numbing loss in a relentless tide of defeats that season. But this wasn’t about baseball, it was about raw sentiment. We wanted to finish with one of the family. As Flanny slowly made his way to the mound, he seemed to arrive from some distant time. He was …

Time Flies When You're Having Fun

With the 40th high school reunion of the Kenwood High Class of 1971 approaching, Now & Then columnist Keith Roberts looks back on the highlights of that year.

I guess the old saying is true, “time really does fly.” Forty years ago the greatest senior class ever (at least in my opinion) graduated from Kenwood Senior High School. The Class of 71 will be holding their 40th reunion next month at Bowleys Quarters Fire Hall. For information on the reunion, please contact Nickie Coppinger at 443-691-7741 or ncopinger1@verizon.net. Thinking about this reunion started me to think about that year and some of the events that took place which were more or less memorable. The single most important thing on the mind of graduating seniors that year was the war in Vietnam and the draft. Was our number in the draft lottery going to be a low one or high one? Were we going to be drafted and sent to Vietnam or not…

'Earl of Baltimore' Reflects on Orioles, Baseball

Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver speaks out on prospect Manny Machado, glory days of the O's and the importance of player development in the minor leagues in his recent visit to Salisbury.

Earl Weaver, with hair so white it seemed to blind TV cameras, sat on a chair in a first-floor conference room in June at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury. He wore a white shirt and dark trousers on the ground floor of the minor league stadium just off Route 50 on the first day of summer. The night before he had made the flight from Florida to Baltimore and then was given a ride to the Eastern Shore, where he was on hand for the Class A South Atlantic League All-Star game last month. The game was held at the home of the Delmarva Shorebirds, a farm team of the Orioles. Weaver was the manager of the Orioles from 1968-82 and again in 1985-86. He was born in St. Louis on August 14, 1930, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1996 and now lives in …

Sean - Certainly true, but an environment where you've got talent developed internally will help facilitate signing the big ticket players. Right now the Orioles have to pay a top free agent, essentially, a signing premium to draw him to Baltimore due to their lack of their ability to compete (which is a Catch 22). Should that internal talent improve it correspondingly improves the ability to …   more ›

Blast Player With Essex Ties Set to Retire

Giuliano Celenza, a former CCBC Essex standout, plans to call it a career after the season.

Giuliano Celenza is not as well known as Cal Ripken, Jr. Still, Celenza, a star player with the Baltimore Blast indoor soccer team, can relate to Ripken, the Hall of Fame shortstop with the Orioles. Both athletes grew up in the Baltimore area, and both spent their entire careers with their hometown teams while bringing championships to Charm City in their respective sports. Celenza, who has won five indoor soccer championships with the Blast, hopes to add one more banner to that collection before retiring at the end of the season. The Essex resident will be honored in a pre-game ceremony prior to the Blast taking on the Chicago Riot at 7:35 p.m. on Friday at the 1st Mariner Arena. “I’ve had a great run and couldn’t ask for anything more …
