Deadline Nears for Nonprofit Sandy Claims

FEMA may reimburse up to 75 percent of storm-related expenses.

The deadline is approaching for nonprofits to claim federal aid for expenses related to Superstorm Sandy. The late-October storm drenched the mid-Atlantic. Nonprofits like volunteer fire companies must submit paperwork to the Federal Emergency Management Agency by Feb. 2. FEMA funding is only available for expenses incurred between Oct. 26 and Nov. 4. According to a Baltimore County news release, nonprofits must prove at least $1,000 in storm expenses, and will have 60 days to send in lists of storm damages and expenses. Up to 75 percent of storm expenses—including generators, repairs and tools—can be reimbursed. Mormon Congregation Collects Donations For Sandy Victims

Two trucks headed to storm-hit areas early Tuesday.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Essex packed two trucks full of thousands of dollars worth of clothing to help families in New York and New Jersey struck by Superstorm Sandy, the church announced. In a press release, the church said 250 volunteers gathered 500 boxes of clothing and $16,400 in gift cards, packing two 32-foot trucks, which left Tuesday morning from the church building on Stemmers Run Road. Craig Halsey, president of the Baltimore Stake of the church, stated that he was "overwhelmed by the generous response. We never expected such abundance. We had to rent an extra truck to fit all of the boxes. It is truly inspiring to witness so many people following Jesus Christ’s admonition to serve others.” …

Maryland Unlikely To See Large Impact From Nor'easter

A National Weather Service forecaster said Maryland is unlikely to get much of a hit from the nor'easter developing to the southeast, one that could hit areas still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.

Here we go again? Just a week after Superstorm Sandy rumbled up the eastern seaboard, a powerful nor'easter appears set to do the same, with the outside chance to dump a wintry mix on parts of Maryland. In an advisory Monday, the National Weather Service said the storm is expected to develop off the Carolina coast on Tuesday before moving north. Ken Widelski, a forecaster with the NWS in Sterling, VA, said in a phone interview that how much precipitiation the Baltimore area gets—if any—depends on how far west the storm forms. "The exact track of the system is very uncertain right now," Widelski said. "There is a chance for some precipitation that would be generally Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night. If that were the case, it could …

PHOTOS: Hurricane Sandy's Destruction Along East Coast

While residents and officials continue to clean up after a superstorm hit the East Coast, we take a look at the most dramatic images from the superstorm.

It's been a long couple of days for residents along the East Coast of the United States. Though the Essex-Middle River area largely "dodged a bullet" as County Councilwoman Cathy Bevins said, towns north of Maryland were not as lucky. First, they prepared for Hurricane Sandy's arrival, amid claims it was the "perfect storm"—filling sandbags, boarding up buildings and buying supplies over the weekend. On Monday, as Sandy approached the Northeast, the winds picked up and officials began evacuations and last-minute preparations, while businesses closed early to avoid the brunt of the superstorm. As residents on the East Coast hunkered down in their apartments and homes, Sandy's wrath battered beach towns, flooded city streets—including …
