Baltimore County Kids 'Shop with a Cop'

Maryland State Troopers, Wal-Mart partner together to help 40 local children buy presents for Christmas.

Christmas came early for 40 Baltimore County children thanks to the Maryland State Police and Wal-Mart. This past Saturday, the children received a police escort to the Golden Ring Wal-Mart and had the opportunity to buy some of the things they had been wishing for this holiday season. The troopers that provided the escort came from the Westminster, Waterloo, Glen Burnie, JFK Highway barracks and the truck unit. Wal-Mart, along with other private sources, donated $100 gift cards for each child to go shopping. The state troopers then assisted their designated shopper with the selection and purchase of their gifts. Following their shopping trip, the troopers drove the children to Eastern Technical High School, where students served the …

"Shop with a Cop" is one of the best community programs ever. The children who participate come away from that day with a better understanding of how police, business owners and community leaders really do care about kids. The kids probably realize that cops prefer protecting them from criminal activity than arresting them for it. It's better to spend a little police time and expense preventing …   more ›

Retailers, Government Encourage E-Waste Recycling

As the holidays approach and consumers get new electronic equipment, there are several options to recycle the old stuff.

Kwame Payne is eagerly preparing the Best Buy store in Golden Ring for the holiday shopping season. The big box electronics store will be full of the latest TVs, computers, smart phones and other electronics when customers pour in when its doors open at midnight after Thanksgiving for “Black Friday.” But, go in the back of the store, and you could find VCRs, tape decks, bulky TVs and dot matrix printers. All of those older electronic items have been dropped off as part of the store’s “e-waste” recycling program. Nationwide, Best Buy recycled—free of charge—more than 75 million pounds of e-waste in 2010. Since it pledged in 2009 to recycle 1 billion pounds of e-waste by 2014, Best Buy has recycled 300 million pounds. “As people get new TVs…

New O's Logo, Uniforms in Time for the Holidays

Patch shares the Orioles new hats and jerseys for you to peruse before the holiday shopping season begins.

The Orioles are turning back the clock in 2012. No, they may not be the powerhouse club that took the field in the late 60s through the 70s. But the Orioles are leaning on their classic look for a new hat logo and a flashback alternate jersey. The club has returned to the cartoon bird hat—with a slight twist on the happy bird that perched on the players' lids in the 70s and 80s—and the ball club has added an alternate orange uniform. The team has altered its sleeve patches, too, adding one to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the opening of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. What do you think of the Orioles new hat logo and alternate uniform? TELL US IN THE COMMENTS ...

Walmart to Become Supercenter, But Not Before Black Friday

The manager of the White Marsh Boulevard store says conversion into a Walmart Supercenter will likely be completed in spring of 2012.

Don't expect construction on the Nottingham Walmart to be completed by Black Friday. The store's conversion into a Walmart Supercenter is expected to be finished between April and June of 2012, store manager Micaiah Wallace said. But as shoppers flood the store's parking lot along White Marsh Boulevard on Thanksgiving night, contractors and equipment won't be getting in the way of deals. Construction will be put on hold during the heaviest shopping hours, Wallace said. This year's Black Friday sale includes a 40-inch Emerson flatscreen television and an HP laptop, each for $248. The manager said he expects between 5,000 and 10,000 shoppers at his store on Nov. 25. Upon completion, the renovated store is expected to feature a produce …
