The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is hosting "First Day Hikes" across the state.
Looking to get a healthy start on the new year? The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is hosting several First Day Hikes across the state on Jan. 1, 2013—including one in the Perry Hall and Kingsville area. Starting at 10 a.m. on New Year's Day, participants will gather at the parking lot outlet for theGunpowder Falls State Park at 10000 Belair Rd. The two-mile guided hike may include a visit to sawmill ruins or the Pot Rocks geological formation. "Participants are asked to wear clothes and shoes appropriate for the weather (rain, snow or shine), and bring water for drinking, and a camera (optional). Sturdy footwear is recommended," according to the MDNR. Dogs on a leash may also attend. The guided hike is free but reservations …

Dive teams searched the Hammerman area of Gunpowder State Park after receiving unconfirmed reports of a child in need of rescue from the water.
UPDATED (6:10 p.m.)—Baltimore County police and fire rescue workers have cleared the Hammerman Area beach of Gunpowder State Park after determining that no one in need of rescue was in the water, according to Baltimore County Public Safety spokeswoman Elise Armacost. First responders had gathered at the Chase beach after receiving unconfirmed reports that a child was in need of rescue. The 2012 Maryland Natural Resource Photo Contest will accept submissions until Aug. 31.
Strolling through the Gunpowder Falls State Park, the light hits the water just right, tree limbs provide the perfect frame—and best of all, you just happen to have your camera with you. If you're a local nature photographer, consider sending your best shots in to the 2012 Maryland Natural Resource Photo Contest. Thirteen total winners will receive prizes ranging from $500 cash to magazine subscriptions. The Day of the Horse, hosted by the Graham Equestrian Center, takes place this weekend in Gunpowder Falls Park.
What child doesn't request a pony for his or her birthday, at least once in a lifetime? What adolecent girl doesn't dream of long lazy summer rides or winning a blue ribbon at a show on a faithful horse? Horses and our relationship with them conjure an imagery that is romantic and rugged, beautiful and alluring and this weekend the relationship will be celebrated right in our own neighborhood. The fourth annual Day of the Horse hosted by the Graham Equestrian Center at Gunpowder Falls State Park is scheduled for Oct. 1.
