Republican candidates for the 2nd Congressional District primary have been invited to a debate set for March 15 at the Del Capri in Dundalk.
When state Sen. Nancy Jacobs decided to formally announce her intentions of running for Congress, the Republican didn’t choose her home base of Harford County. Instead, the longtime state legislator announced her candidacy for Maryland’s 2nd Congressional District seat at JAD’s Caddyshack in Essex. Jacobs said eastern Baltimore County would play a vital role in deciding the nominee and also the winner of the general election in November. “I believe that Essex, Middle River and Dundalk are all communities in play during this election,” Jacobs said. “If there was ever a year a Republican could win this seat, this is the year.” Follow Essex-Middle River Patch on Facebook and Twitter. Jacobs is one of five Republican challengers trying to …

The Navy announced plans to move the naval hospital ship from Baltimore to Norfolk, VA.
U.S. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger said today he would fight to keep the USNS Comfort from moving from Baltimore to Norfolk, VA next year. WBAL-TV reported that the Navy would save around $2 million annually with the move from the Port of Baltimore. Here is Ruppersberger’s complete statement regarding the Navy’s decision to move the USNS Comfort: “The Comfort is a source of pride, jobs and tax dollars for Maryland. A new $7 million facility at the Warfield Air National Guard base will serve the military, Martin State Airport and the surrounding community.
The Middle River community received a new public safety resource Thursday as a new fire station officially opened at the Warfield Air National Guard base. The new $7 million facility replaced a fire station that was more than 40 years old had cracks in the walls, a leaky roof and a lack of space for training, according to a news release. The old building didn’t even have enough space to house the department’s fire trucks. According to the Maryland Air National Guard, the new station is 21,000 square feet, has a classroom that seats 40 people, includes a dispatch center and can house eight pieces of firefighting equipment. Firefighters at the station—which was paid with federal funds—respond to call at the base, at adjacent Martin State …

The death of a Middle River girl struck and killed by a train in 2010 provided the motivation for the newly released research from the University of Maryland.
Anna Marie Stickel never heard the train coming that struck and killed her a little more than two years ago. The 14-year-old Middle River girl had headphones on as she listened to music and walked along the tracks on the way to school that tragic day. It was Stickel’s death that prompted Dr. Richard Lichenstein to study the dangers of pedestrians wearing headphones. What Lichenstein, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of pediatric emergency medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center, discovered was that Stickel’s death was far from an isolated incident. Her death, he concluded, could be a part of a national safety issue. According to Lichenstein’s study, 116 people …

Tara Stickel is pleased with security upgrades along the train tracks in Middle River where her daughter was struck and killed as she walked to school on Jan. 5, 2010.
There were still plenty of tears, but friends and family of Anna Marie Stickel also took a few moments to smile and laugh Thursday night. They gathered to remember the Middle River teen who was hit and killed by a train as she walked along the train tracks to school two years ago. The candlelight vigil was held on Orems Road, close to where Stickel was killed on Jan. 5, 2010. More than 50 people came out to remember the beautiful 14-year-old, who was a freshman at Kenwood at the time of her death. “It’s not easy, but we can celebrate her life more this year than mourn her passing,” said Tara Stickel, Anna Marie’s mother. “It’s nice to know there are still so many people out there that care for her.” As she wiped away her tears, Tara …
