A popular vote will determine the winner in a national contest sponsored by Johnsonville.
Greater Dundalk residents—and fans from around the region—have known for 37 years what a great community celebration Heritage Fair is. Now they have the chance to tell the entire country that the festival created to celebrate the country's Bicentennial is the best in the land. Thanks to St. Helena resident Dolores Bell, Dundalk's Heritage Fair has been named one of the nation's top 20 community celebrations in Johnsonville's nationwide search for the "Best of US." "We called on America to share with us the inspiring stories about the events and festivals that make our country great, and we received so many amazing entries—one of which was for Dundalk Heritage Fair," Johnsonville officials said in a letter to Bell. "It was hard to narrow …

Essex Patch presents its Photo of the Day.
Dundalk photographer Jimmy Rode captured this image of a red-breasted merganser seemingly sunning, or perhaps looking for dinner, from a perfectly placed rock. He took in the scene while at Cox's Point Park in Essex. View other Essex Patch photos of the day here. Do you have a photo you'd like featured as the Essex Patch Photo of the Day? Send it to marge.neal@patch.com. While it seems there are many birdwatchers in Essex, photos can be pretty much of anything (keeping in mind this is a family-oriented publication, of course!). School performances, award presentations, flower and vegetable gardens, town scenery, architecture, people, dogs, cats—use your imagination! Follow Essex-Middle River Patch on Facebook & Twitter. The Sparrows Point advisory group stresses most of the jobs are at least 10 years away from reality.
A partnership created by Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, in unveiling its vision for the future of the industrial Sparows Point peninsula, says an expansion of the Port of Baltimore could bring more than 10,000 jobs back to the area. The Sparrows Point Partnership, a business advisory group established by the county after the former RG Steel mill closed in May 2012, announced its proposal at a press conference Friday. Chaired by Dan Gunderson, executive director of the Baltimore County Department of Economic Development, the partnership includes representatives from the Port of Baltimore and commercial, real estate, manufacturing, logistics and distribution entities in the region. The committee identified four major area of …

The Dundalk-area road will be closed this weekend between Holabird Avenue and Dunhill Road.

Broening Highway will be closed between Holabird Avenue and Dunhill Road from 7 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. Local traffic patterns will be maintained for area businesses. All motorists in the area should be on the watch for changing traffic patterns and are encouraged to use alternate routes, according to the statement. The Dundalk restaurant wins bragging rights in Fox 45's best hamburger tournament.
Even with the power of its location (Oriole Park at Camden Yards) and the crowds of the Baltimore Orioles' home-opening weekend series, Dempsey's Brew Pub and restaurant was no match for Donna's Tavern and Restaurant of Dundalk. The Pine Avenue's Crabby Patty defeated Dempsey's and its Dempsey Burger—described as a freshly ground chuck burger topped with sharp cheddar cheese, smoked bacon, red onions, lettuce and tomato—in the finals of the Fox 45-TV Burger Bracket contest to name Baltimore's Best Burger. "I'm still amazed that we won," Heather Sekora, manager of Donna's, said in a phone interview Monday with Patch. "To win against Dempsey's on Opening Day is really something else." Dempsey's is named for former Orioles catcher—and current…

Donna's Tavern and Restaurant faces an uphill battle against Dempsey's Brew Pub just as baseball season kicks off.
There's good news and bad news for Donna's Tavern and Restaurant as it pursues its claim to being the home of Baltimore's best hamburger. The Pine Avenue eatery has advanced to the final round of Fox 45's Burger Bracket competition to name the metropolitan area's best burger. In voting that ended Sunday night, Donna's defeated the Greene Turtle of Hunt Valley. But the restaurant's next opponent, Dempsey's Brew Pub and Restaurant, has a distinct home field advantage this week as the final round of voting takes place. The pub, named for former Baltimore Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey, is located at Oriole Park at Camden Yards where, of course, the baseball season begins this week. With the Orioles' home opener scheduled for Friday, Dempsey's …

No one won the top prize of $260 million in the multi-state game Wednesday night, driving the top prize even higher.
Though two tickets worth $1 million each were sold in Maryland this week for the March 20 Powerball drawing, no one won the top prize of $260 million. A Dundalk man and a Westminster couple each won $1 million as second-tier winners in the March 20 drawing, which means their tickets matched all five white balls but not the gold Powerball number. The Dundalk man, a 68-year-old retiree who has claimed his prize but chooses to remain anonymous, bought his ticket at the Giant grocery store on Merritt Boulevard, according to Maryland Lottery officials. Thanks to the rollover of Wednesday's jackpot, ticket buyers for tonight's drawing can dream about what they would do with $320 million. Tickets can be bought at any retail center offering …
