The Bayhawks' season ends with a 45-0 loss to Edmondson in the Class 2A North finals on Saturday at Poly.
Chesapeake’s season came to a screeching halt on Saturday as the Bayhawks lost 45-0 to Edmondson in the Class 2A North region finals at Poly. Edmondson led 13-0 after the first quarter and 39-0 at halftime to put the game out of reach. The Red Storm (8-4) advances to play at Middletown in the 2A semifinals. With the loss, Chesapeake (8-4) had its eight-game winning streak snapped. The game was the complete opposite from the previous week when the Bayhawks blanked Lake Clifton, 38-0. Still, the Bayhawks end the season with much to be proud of after winning the Baltimore County 2A/3A/4A Division title and qualifing for the postseason after starting the season 0-3. This season also marked the first for Chesapeake coach Rocco Bruno at the helm…

The Bayhawks are looking to get back to the state semifinals for the first time since 1984 as they face Edmondson in the Class 2A North regional finals on Saturday at Poly.
Chesapeake coach Rocco Bruno said he feels like his team is playing with house money right now. The first-year coach’s goal when he took over the Bayhawks program in early August was to win the 2A/3A/4A Baltimore County title and qualify for the playoffs. Now, Chesapeake is just one win away from a region title when the team faces top-seeded Edmondson in the Class 2A North finals at 4 p.m. Saturday at Poly. The Bayhawks, who advanced with a 38-0 win over Lake Clifton last week, have not reached the state semifinals since their lone appearance in 1984. “It’s just been an amazing run,” said Bruno, following the Lake Clifton win. “This is way more than we ever expected and the players have handled themselves like winners.” Chesapeake’s run …

After dropping their two previous meetings, the Vikings drop the Mavericks, 5-1, in Friday's 2A North final.
In Friday afternoon’s Class 2A North regional finals, Lansdowne gave head coach Jamie Izdebski the most rewarding birthday present she could ask for—her Vikings finally vaulted the hurdle that is Eastern Tech. After dropping the squad’s two previous meetings this year, Lansdowne jumped out on Mavericks freshman hurler Jordan Cargile early on, put together a near flawless game defensively and rode another strong effort from starter Maude McCourry to a 5-1 victory and a spot in the Class 2A State Semifinals. The Vikings also handed Eastern Tech (18-1) its first loss of the year. “I told them that’s what I wanted for my birthday. I wanted to win this game,” Izdebski said. “They came out and played totally different than we have ever played …

Baltimore County powers will compete in the Class 2A North regional finals at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in Essex.
Senior right hander Liz Bondarenko struck out six batters, walked one and yielded just one hit during Thursday's 10-0, Class 2A North Regional semifinal shutout of Baltimore County rival Dundalk. Bondarenko improved to 8-0 and has a 1.78 ERA, helping the Mavericks rise to 18-0 overall entering Friday's 1:30 p.m. clash with county nemesis Lansdowne. The Vikings have already lost to the Mavericks twice this season, including in the county championship game earlier this month. Also playing well for the Mavericks were senior first baseman Carly Wheat, junior second baseman Allison Williams and junior center fielder Alexis Peay. Peay went 3-for-4 with a home run, Wheat was 3-for-3 with a triple and Williams was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Mount …
Digital Harbor overcomes early deficit en route to an 8-3 victory over Eastern Tech.
Eastern Tech's run toward the school's third state title ended Wednesday following its 8-3 loss to Baltimore City's Digital Harbor in the Class 2A North regional semifinal. The Mavericks led 2-0 in the top of the first inning, but fell behind 6-2, following the Rams scoring of one, two and three runs, respectively, in the bottom of the first, second and third innings. The Mavericks scored once more in the fourth, but the Rams answered with one more run during each of the fifth and sixth innings. Adam Szamski went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored, and Jimmy Szamski went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Eastern Tech (11-6). Additionally, Nick McElfish went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base for the Mavericks, who …

Eastern Tech takes on Digital Harbor in Class 2A North semifinals as the Essex school remains focused on winning the program's third state title.
Eastern Tech’s senior class has posted a 38-13 record. During that span, the Mavericks have won two region titles and played in a Class 2A state championship game in 2009. Still, those seniors believe there is only one way to cap their very successful careers: win a state title. “Since March 1, our only goal has been to win a state championship,” said senior outfielder Nick McElfish. “We have a tradition of winning at Eastern Tech and I can’t think of a better way to complete my career.” For Eastern Tech, the defending Class 2A North champions appear in good shape to compete for their eighth region title in the last nine years and potentially go after the program’s third 2A state title and first since 2007. The Mavericks improved to 11-5 …

Mavericks advance to 2A North semis with win over Lake Clifton; seeking third straight region crown.
Eastern Tech volleyball coach Sarah Nugent walked into the first day of practice in August and saw a talented team that just needed to understand how to play as a complete unit. The Mavericks (14-2) appear close to doing just that after advancing to the Class 2A North semifinals following their 25-8, 25-8, 25-5 win over Lake Clifton in qurterfinal action in Essex. Eastern Tech next plays Wednesday when it hosts the winner of Dundalk and Landsdowne. "We've worked all season long to have a shot at the championship," said Nugent, in her first year with the Mavericks. "They understand what is at stake and they just need to make sure to remain focused." Junior Danielle Cockey had eight kills and eight aces, senior Courtney Crout had eight aces …
Mavericks to host Dundalk in Class 2A North semis; soccer region finals set
Eastern Tech (9-1) will be the top seed in the Class 2A North region football playoffs, which begins Friday. The Mavericks will begin defense of their 2A state title when they host fourth-seeded Dundalk (7-3) at 7 p.m. Friday at CCBC Essex. Eastern Tech closed out the regular season with a 34-21 win at Patuxent. In that win, senior fullback Josh Cannella finished with 217 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 21 carries as the Mavericks rallied from a 21-7 halftime deficit to score 27 unanswered points. The comeback included a 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brad Hager to Chris Pomory and a 3-yard touchdown run by Marquiese Bannister in the fourth quarter. Dundalk enters Friday's game coming off a 34-32 win at Owings Mills. Here …

Mavericks score three first-half goals en route to a 4-1 win in the Class 2A North semifinals.
Eastern Tech kept its season alive Friday, scoring three first half goals in a 4-1 win at Lansdowne in a Class 2A North semifinal game. The sixth-seeded Mavericks (7-8-1) advance to the 2A North regional championship to face the winner of Dundalk and Overlea, the other regional semifinal. Eastern Tech's early goal came when senior Zach Egner raced down the sideline virtually unimpeded to beat the keeper at the 36:30 mark. The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead when junior Zach Crowther corralled a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and rolled in a shot that slipped passed sophomore goal keeper Abednego Anyaoha. Trevor Hagy added the insurance, scoring Eastern Tech's final two goals, one just before the half and another in the second half…

Eastern Tech's football team enters final week of season at 8-1 and in prime position to go after second straight 2A state crown.
Dan McManus did not feel a sense of relief after the defensive tackle helped lead Eastern Tech to the school's first Class 2A state title in football last fall. It only motivated him more. Eastern Tech is in prime position to repeat as champions this year as the Mavericks close out the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday at Patuxent in a non-league game. The Mavericks enter the week 8-1 and are in first place in the Class 2A North region. The top four teams in each region advance to the postseason, which culminates Dec. 2-4 at M&T Bank Stadium. "When you get that feeling of playing in M&T Bank Stadium, you want to do it again," said McManus, who has 57 tackles and nine sacks this season. "When you play for Eastern Tech, the goal is always to …

I must say, I was very impressed by the Mavericks last night against Landsdowne. While the young Mav's seemed uninspired against a weaker Lake Clifton team the girls came out and played a great game against a better team. City on Friday should be another win and then next weak we will see how the talented Mavericks will play against a VERY good Calvert team; assuming they win. Coach Nugent is …   more ›
