Kamenetz Updates Chamber on Middle River Depot

The county executive spoke about a number of Essex-Middle River issues with the Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce.

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz is optimistic that the long-dormant Middle River Depot will one-day be part of a vibrant economic engine for the Middle River-White Marsh corridor. Kamenetz provided insight into the future of the property while speaking to members of the Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce Tuesday at Crab Quarters in Middle River. Kamenetz said he recently met with the owners of the property, who paid $37.5 million in an online government auction in 2006, about their plans for the 55-acre site. He believes they will be able to develop new retail opportunities while maintaining its historical integrity and respecting the facilities aviation legacy. The owners have applied to get the property rezoned for mixed-…

Eastern Baltimore County Honors Jim Smith

The Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce and the Baltimore County Marine Trades Association honored the former county executive with a luncheon.

Former Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith was born and raised in Reisterstown but while Smith’s roots are from the western part of the county, many Essex-Middle River residents consider him one of their own. From the expansion of Route 43 to the opening of new communities, Smith oversaw a radical redevelopment of eastern Baltimore County during his eight years as county executive from 2002-2010. Members of the Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce and the Baltimore County Marine Trades Association recognized Smith’s contribution to the community and honored him with a luncheon recently at The River Watch Restaurant in Essex. Joan, never saw a politician pass up a good photo-op. Some issues going on here that are troublesome. This comment is akin to a recent radio gaff: "Smith said if there was a silver lining from the destruction brought by Isabel, ..." I wonder if the people who lost everything including treasures that were irreplaceable saw that silver lining. I took up for Councilwoman Bevins over the mystery note…   more ›

Hometown Heroes Honored at Annual Chamber Gala

The Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce recognized 23 individuals that represented area firefighters, police officers, servicemen and medical personnel.

Baltimore County Fire Department Lt. Scott Ebbert knew that he had the training necessary to help rescue his fellow firefighters, if they ever became trapped during a blaze. He just hoped he never had to utilize that training. But that day came on Jan. 19 when he was one of the many firefighters who tried to rescue Lutherville volunteer firefighter Mark Falkenhan when he became trapped inside a burning apartment building. While Falkenhan, a Middle River resident, was rescued from the building, he died that night, an evening Ebbert will remain etched in his memory for the rest of his life. “That was the toughest day of my career,” said Ebbert, a Parkville resident based at the Golden Ring station. “Mark was a friend and you just never think…

Bevins: Middle River Depot Development Will Happen

Councilwoman said owners of the 55-acre property hope to begin development in 2012.

The owners of the long-abandoned 55-acre Middle River Depot will be ready to finally begin redeveloping the property in 2012, Baltimore County Councilwoman Cathy Bevins said. Bevins said she expects development to begin once the council completes the quadrennial comprehensive rezoning process in about 16 months. “I’ve met with the owners several times already and they are ready to get started as soon as they know what zoning will be in place for the property,” said Bevins, following the annual membership luncheon of the Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce at Crab Quarters in Middle River. Mexican businessman Alberto Saba and New York developers, Joey Aini and Jack Avita, bought the site in 2006 for $37.5 million—then a record for an …

Putty 1,000 plus townhomes in a wooded area in Baltimore County seems awfully crowded. This is Baltimore County, not city. We have farmers, landowners, property. We would love to see a nature park. Maybe they should reconsider the amount of homes. Where would 2,000 plus cars go along with the children. Of course, don't forget the animals that have lived on this land for how long now. That is the …   more ›

Freshmen Legislators Offer Fresh Perspective

Three of the five newest members of the Baltimore County Council spoke at a luncheon co-sponsored by Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce and the Marine Trades Association of Baltimore County.

Councilwoman Cathy Bevins said recently that since her election in November, she is constantly asked what her priorities are on the job. Her answer is simple: “Your priorities are my priorities. When you tell me your priorities then I can tell you what my priorities are.” Bevins’ remarks came at a recent luncheon at Riverwatch Restaurant in Essex. The event was co-sponsored by the Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce and the Marine Trades Association of Baltimore County. Bevins was one featured speaker, along with fellow freshmen Councilmen David Marks and Todd Huff. Bevins, who represents the Sixth District, used the opportunity to further explain her support for several pieces of legislation, including the expansion of speed cameras …
