I don't know who is #1. I don't think EVT is even #1 in 3A. I'll be surprised if the win the next two. I think the Hereford could go eith way. And I don't think they can beat whoever they play next. If Northern meets them in the semis Northern will win. But I do they EVT is a good team and will be a good team for years to come. Just not #1.   more ›

County Senators Seek to Overturn Redistricting Plan

A suit filed by Democratic Senators Delores Kelley and Jim Brochin says the plan violates the Maryland Constitution and protects the political voice of Baltimore City at the expense of Baltimore County.

UPDATED (1:13 p.m.)—Two Baltimore County state senators have filed suit in the state Court of Appeals seeking to overturn Maryland's recently enacted legislative redistricting plan. Democratic Senators Jim Brochin and Delores Kelley, in a suit filed Tuesday, claim the new districts violate the Maryland Constitution and a 2002 Court of Appeals ruling that governs redistricting. A copy of the lawsuit is attached to this story. The suit is one of four seeking to overturn Gov. Martin O'Malley's redistricting plan. At the heart of the 17-page complaint are allegations that the commission that redrew the state's 47 legislative districts unfairly protected the city's political power in Annapolis, while diluting the county's representation. "For …

Cigarette Smuggling On Rise in Maryland

21 people have been arrested for smuggling untaxed cigarettes in Baltimore County so far this year.

Cigarette smuggling in Maryland is on the rise, according to Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot. "We've got an epidemic of this smuggling in our state," Franchot said during a Thursday news conference in Towson with Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger. Police confiscated 10,000 packs of alleged contraband cigarettes during a traffic stop near White Marsh. More than 3,100 packs were seized in a stop involving a Honda Accord two weeks ago. The state comptroller said his office has prosecuted more cases of cigarette smuggling "in the last nine months than we have in the previous five years." In Baltimore County, there have been 20 formal cigarette smuggling investigations since mid-2006 resulting in the arrest of 28 …

Back River Treatment Plant Will Be Partially Powered by Solar Energy

The addition of 4,200 solar panels are expected to generate 1,000 kilowatts of electricity per hour.

The Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant could soon significantly reduce its energy costs thanks to a newly completed array of solar panels at the Essex facility.  According to figures released by Baltimore City, the 4,200 panels —installed by Johnson Controls—will save the city $6 million over the life of the project. The city invested $4 million in the project, which was offset by a $900,000 grant from the Maryland Energy Administration. The panels are expected to generate 1,000 kilowatts of electricity per hour and are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 9,500 metric tons annually, according to a Baltimore City news release. According to the release, this is the “equivalent to planting 245,500 trees and removing …

Olszewski Jr.: It Was Time to Tighten the State Budget Belt

Baltimore County will lose about $14 million in new budget, but several counties will lose much more.

The 2012 legislative session in Annapolis has drawn to a conclusion, at least for now.  The main focus of every session, and the reason for uncertainty about whether or not there may be a special session in the coming weeks, deals with the state budget.  The House of Delegates and the State Senate proposed significantly different versions of the state budget, neither of which reflected Gov. Martin O’Malley’s initial budget proposal. Under the House plan, income taxes would have been raised on those making over $100,000 individually and $150,000 jointly under adjusted gross income (calculated after taxes are taken). The Senate’s plan would have increased income tax rate by a quarter percent on almost everyone, as well as created a new, …

Baltimore County Ranked Below Average in Healthiness

More adults smoke, are physically inactive and the county has more unemployed residents than the state average.

Baltimore County ranked as the 13th healthiest county in Maryland out of the state's 24 counties and Baltimore City, according to a new ranking of counties across the United States. The rankings were released this week by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and assessed the health of nearly every county in the country. Researchers examined health behavior, clinical care, social and economic factors as well as the physical environment, according to a press release. The rankings also take into account the number of fast food restaurants in a community, as well as how physically active or inactive residents are. Milford Mill 7-Eleven Sells Record Mega Millions Winner

One Maryland resident may have woken up at least $105 million richer.

UPDATE (1:46 p.m.)—This week friends, neighbors and colleagues have been asking the same question: what would I do if I won hundreds of millions of dollars overnight?
