Richardson Nominated To Head Corrections Department

The 33-year veteran has work for the county for a decade and would replace James O'Neill.

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz has nominated Deborah Richardson to head the county Department of Corrections. Richardson has worked for the county for more than a decade and is currently deputy director. If confirmed, she will replace James O'Neill who is retiring. "She brings a wealth of experience combined with a firm but compassionate approach to public safety," Kamenetz said in a statement released Tuesday. Richardson holds a master's degree in management from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor's degree in psychology from University of Maryland Baltimore County.  Prior to working for Baltimore County, Richardson worked for the Maryland Division of Corrections as a Correctional Officer and counselor in 1979.  She was …

Baltimore County Appeals Pension Ruling

A federal judge grants the county permission to seek an appeal while the damages phase of the trial continues.

Baltimore County will appeal a federal judge's ruling in October that found pension rules that charge some county employees different rates are discriminatory. At issue is an October ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Benson Everett Legg that found that the county's pension rules requiring different contribution rates from employees based on age violates the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967. That ruling came after a federal appeals court overturned Legg's original ruling that was in favor of the county. The county asked Legg for permission to seek an appeal on his current ruling while the trial enters the damages phase. Judge Rules County Pension Guilty of Age Discrimination

The lawsuit was filed in 2007 on behalf of two county Department of Corrections employees.

Baltimore County pension rules that charge some employees different rates are discriminatory, according to a ruling by a federal judge. U.S District Court Judge Benson Everett Legg ruled that pension rules requiring different contribution rates from employees based on age violates the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which brought the suit in 2007, announced the decision Monday afternoon. The federal commission brought the suit on behalf of two county Department of Corrections employees. The county made changes to its pension system in July 2007. Employees hired after that date contributed to their pensions at a flat rate regardless of their age at the time of their hiring. …

County Corrections Officer Candidate for 'Everyday Hero' Honor

Michael Morris, a corrections officer and volunteer firefighter, is one of four candidates for a national award from the American Federation of Teachers.

A Baltimore County corrections officer is up for a prestigious national honor. Michael Morris, who works at the Baltimore County Detention Center in Towson, was announced this week as a semi-finalist for the American Federation of Teachers' Public Employee Division Everyday Hero Award. Morris, vice president of the Baltimore County Federation of Public Employees, is also a sergeant in the Maryland National Guard and a volunteer fire fighter and medic, according to a BCFPE press release. Morris serves with the Rosedale and English Counsul volunteer fire companies. His citation on the AFT website describes acts of heroism including following his uncle into a burning home at age 16 and preventing an inmate's suicide attempt in December. …
