Pizza John's, a Local Landmark

Anyone who has ever spent time in the Essex-Middle River area knows about Pizza John's. There's a good reason for that.

Heather Ziehl grew up in Essex, and she considers nights eating at Pizza John’s  as one of her fondest childhood memories. “It’s a legend in my family,” she said. Ziehl’s father passed away a decade ago, and she said, “It’s the one thing he and I did together every single Friday night for years." Visit the Pizza John’s Facebook page, and you’ll read similar tales of nostalgia mixed with praise. Brothers' Dream Remains Reality 75 Years Later

Salvo Auto Parts continues to be a mainstay in Baltimore County.

For many various reasons such as economics, property damage or loss, bad location, poor planning or more, businesses can seem to often come and go. Every now and then, however, the right combination creates a business that becomes a local landmark. Seventy-five years ago, three young enterprising brothers by the names of Joseph, Samuel and Eugene joined together to create a business which is going stronger than ever today. In 1935, the Salvo brothers chose the site of an old blacksmith shop near the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Back River Neck Road to build their "gas station." The first floor of the three-story building housed the actual business with the gas pumps outside. The second floor served as the offices of the business. And…
