Robert Ey, 26, of the 900 block of Middlesex Road, was struck and killed by the train May 1.
A 26-year-old Middle River man has been identified as the person struck and killed May 1 by a MARC train. Baltimore County police said Robert Ey, of the 900 block of Middlesex Road, was walking south on the tracks around 7:15 a.m. when a train traveling about 100 mph hit him near Northeast Creek Road and Schaefer Lane in Rosedale. According to a police news release, investigators ruled Ey's death an accident. The accident caused delays for commuters, who had to be transferred to another train. Many passengers described the moments after the accident to Patch through interviews, emails and blog posts. Ey's death represents at least the third person killed on the tracks in eastern Baltimore County since January 2010. Amtrak recently …

The death of a Middle River girl struck and killed by a train in 2010 provided the motivation for the newly released research from the University of Maryland.
Anna Marie Stickel never heard the train coming that struck and killed her a little more than two years ago. The 14-year-old Middle River girl had headphones on as she listened to music and walked along the tracks on the way to school that tragic day. It was Stickel’s death that prompted Dr. Richard Lichenstein to study the dangers of pedestrians wearing headphones. What Lichenstein, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of pediatric emergency medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center, discovered was that Stickel’s death was far from an isolated incident. Her death, he concluded, could be a part of a national safety issue. According to Lichenstein’s study, 116 people …

Tara Stickel is pleased with security upgrades along the train tracks in Middle River where her daughter was struck and killed as she walked to school on Jan. 5, 2010.
There were still plenty of tears, but friends and family of Anna Marie Stickel also took a few moments to smile and laugh Thursday night. They gathered to remember the Middle River teen who was hit and killed by a train as she walked along the train tracks to school two years ago. The candlelight vigil was held on Orems Road, close to where Stickel was killed on Jan. 5, 2010. More than 50 people came out to remember the beautiful 14-year-old, who was a freshman at Kenwood at the time of her death. “It’s not easy, but we can celebrate her life more this year than mourn her passing,” said Tara Stickel, Anna Marie’s mother. “It’s nice to know there are still so many people out there that care for her.” As she wiped away her tears, Tara …

Residents, police, paramedics remember what happened on Jan. 4, 1987 when 16 people died following what was at the time the deadliest Amtrak crash in U.S. history.
Even a quarter century later, John and Dawn Kerner have a hard time speaking about the horrors that took place on the railroad tracks just behind their Chase home. The Kerners were coming home from church on a bitterly cold Sunday afternoon—Jan. 4, 1987—when they saw smoke billowing nearby. Then chaos ensued. At 1:04 p.m., 25 years ago today, Amtrak train 94, the Colonial, slammed into a set of Conrail freight locomotives. In an instant, 16 people were killed and 175 were injured. In the years since the crash, laws have changed, wounds have healed but the memories of that cold January day are still fresh. Without thinking twice, John Kerner quickly went inside, changed and darted out to the scene that day along with many of his neighbors …

The improved fencing will include the stretch of track where 14-year-old Anna Marie Stickel was killed in 2010.
More than 6,400 feet of fencing should be fully erected by the end of September along a stretch of train tracks where a Middle River teen was struck and killed last year. Amtrak officials confirm that workers are on pace to complete the $3.1 million project within the timeframe they predicted when it announced the upgrades in late April. When completed, there will be nearly two miles of continuous fencing from Martin Boulevard to Stemmers Run Road. Individuals may also use the pedestrian underpass at Martin Boulevard, which will also be improved as part of the project, to safely cross to the other side of the tracks. The section of track where the fence is being installed includes Acela Express and Northeast Regional service, as well as …

Police say the person was probably struck by a train along a portion of the tracks at Middle River and Old Orems roads.
Baltimore County police are investigating the discovery of a body near the train tracks in Middle River on Wednesday morning. The body was discovered about 10:30 a.m. by the Amtrak train tracks near Middle River and Old Orems roads. Police said the person—whose body was so mangled they could not identify whether it was a man or woman—was likely struck by a train. Amtrak has been contacted to participate in the investigation. If the person was struck by a train, it would mark the latest fatality along the tracks that has long been an issue with residents concerned about people, especially students, using the tracks as a shortcut. Anna Marie Stickel, a 14-year-old Kenwood High student, was killed while walking on the tracks last January. Her…

Anna Marie Stickel never wanted to miss school. So when the 14-year-old Kenwood freshman missed her bus last January, she decided to take a shortcut to school by walking along the railroad tracks near her Middle River home. That decision proved fatal. Anna Marie was killed by an Amtrak train. A friend walking with her heard the train and got out of the way at the last second. Anna Marie’s death rocked the Essex-Middle River community, leading to several online tributes on Facebook and YouTube. On Wednesday, about 200 friends and family gathered for a candlelight vigil to mark the one-year anniversary of Anna Marie’s death, celebrating the life of the beautiful blonde girl who touched so many. During the vigil, along Orems Road near the …

With no other means of transportation some people have to walk. And by walking to go the shortest means possible. But it doesn't mean that it's always safeway. Kids have been known to cross through those tracks to get to school. Amtrak and police know this. They should make it safe for crossing.   more ›
