Prudential Seeks Top Young Volunteers
The financial services firm will honor two Maryland students next February.
Prudential is looking for Maryland's top young volunteers as part of an annual statewide contest.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognizes students in fifth through 12 grades who perform volunteer service in their communities. Applications are available online for the 19th annual honors, and will be accepted through Nov. 5.
The winners will be named in February. Winners in each state will receive $1,000, engraved silver medallions and a four-day trip to Washington for four days of special events, according to a release.
“Prudential is proud to honor young people who contribute their time and talents to improving the communities around them,” Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld said in the release.
“We celebrate their service with hope that others will be inspired to follow their fine example.”
One high school entrant and one middle school entrant will be selected as the winner from each state and Washington, DC. Maryland's two winners this year were William Michie, 18, of Annapolis and Sade Miller, 13, of Denton. Michie self-published a book to raise money to plant trees in deforested villages of Nicaragua and Guatemala. Sade was recognized for collecting food for needy residents, teaching swimming for kids, tutoring kindergarteners and walking dogs for a local animal shelter, according to a release.

Applications must be certified by a principal, Girl Scout council, 4-H agent, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or HandsOn Network Affiliate.
