Neighbors to Take Back Streets with National Night Out Events

Community leaders in Hawthorne and Aero Acres will hold events to bring neighbors together in crime-prevention activities.

Essex and Middle River communities will once again come together Tuesday night to celebrate National Night Out, a crime-prevention activity designed to build neighborhood camaraderie and encourage community-police relationships.

Community leaders in Aero Acres and Hawthorne are planning celebrations that combine food, games, displays, hikes and other activities to help prevent crime on their streets.

In Hawthorne, residents are invited to walk the paved walking/biking trail through Hawthorne and Dark Head parks at 4 p.m. Tuesday as a lead-in to the NNO activities that begin at 5:30 p.m. at Hawthorne Elementary School.

Those who wish to walk the trail with the group should meet at the school's main entrance by 4 p.m. The walk may take from 30 minutes to an hour, according to organizers, and may be shortened or lengthened according to ability.

During the community's National Night Out gathering, participants will be treated to free hot dogs and other refreshments, courtesy of the Hawthorne Civic Association and first responders.

Essex Police Precinct 11, fire department personnel, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Target will be among those participating to bring the community together, according to a Patch Calendar of Events listing for the  gathering.

National Night Out, an initiative of the National Association of Town Watch, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this summer, according to its website. Started in 1984, the event is traditionally held the first Tuesday in August.

In 1984, 2.5 million Americans took part in National Night Out activities held in 400 communities in 23 states.

The effort now involves more than 37 million people in 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide.

The trademark symbol of the effort is the turning on of porch lights in participating communities.
