The Maryland SPCA hopes the satellite location will become a permanent facility with community support.

If you go holiday shopping at the White Marsh Mall in the coming weekends, know that you can make your family a little bigger thanks to a temporary satellite location for the Maryland SPCA, seeking to find homes for cats and kittens.

On Saturday, the adoption center opened in a former pet store, and the cats will be available for adoption on Fridays through Sundays until the end of the year.

"We’re excited about this new project and would love to see this new adoption center become a permanent one," said Aileen Gabbey, executive director of the Maryland SPCA. "We will need community support in order to secure a long-term lease to continue this special project."

In its first weekend, the satellite center for Maryland SPCA found homes for seven kittens, according to spokesperson Tina Regester.

The Maryland SPCA helps families adopt more than 3,000 pets a year without any funding from the government or national ASPCA, according to a press release from the organization.

The White Marsh satellite center will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Full-grown cats can be adopted for $55 and kittens can be adopted for $100. All of the pets are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and given a microchip implant. Adoptions also include a $17 charge for the microchip, a collar and ID tags.
