Sports Roundup: CCBC Essex Soccer Starts Season Strong

Men and women's teams kick off 2011 with wins; volleyball's rally comes up short.

The CCBC Essex men's soccer team opened its 2011 season with a 4-0 win at Chesapeake College.

Freshman goalie Mike Sevick (Sparrows Point) posted a shutout in his first collegiate game. The Knights (1-0) next play at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Cecil Community College.

CCBC Essex 8, Salem CC (NJ) 0: Goalie Rebecca Plantholt (Baltimore Lutheran) earned her first collegiate shutout as the Lady Knights opened the season with a win in Carney’s Point, NJ. CCBC Essex (1-0) next plays at 11 a.m. Saturday when it hosts Harford Community College in MD JUCO action.

Harford CC 3, CCBC Essex 2: The Knights rallied back after losing the first two games before eventually falling 24-26, 17-25, 25-18, 25-17, 11-15 in head coach Viviana Zamora-Luna's debut match.

The Knights (0-1) next hit the court Saturday and Sunday when they compete in the Dragon Tournament, hosted by Howard Community College.
