Prep Wrestling: Mavericks, Cougars Come Up Big in Eastside Challenge

Eastern Tech, Mount Carmel come away with two wins in against Essex rivals Kenwood, Chesapeake.

Eastern Tech's season got off to a rough start when the Mavericks lost their season opener, 58-15, to Dulaney last week.

Since then, Eastern Tech has started to build momentum for its young team, including placing six of the nine wrestlers it fielded in Parkville's Knightmare Invitational on Saturday.

The Mavericks followed that up by picking up wins over neighborhood rivals Kenwood and Chesapeake, 51-27 and 47-15, respectively, last night in a tri-meet that also included Mount Carmel.  Mount Carmel defeated Chesapeake

The matches were part of the inaugural Eastside Challenge, a yearlong athletics competition between the four Essex high schools.

"To get two wins over rivals like that is always a big deal," said Mavericks coach Kevin Cross, a 2000 Eastern Tech graduate who is in his first year at the helm. "Beating Kenwood is always important and this East County Challenge is good for the whole school."

Dustin Shackelford (140) had two pins, Jesse Bradley (152) had a pin and a technical fall victory and Stephen Beam (135) had a technical fall win for Eastern Tech.

Bradley said a performance like this was exactly what the Mavericks needed following the loss to Dulaney. Eastern Tech returns to the mat on Thursday when it wrestles at Lansdowne.

"These wins really boosted our confidence," Bradley said. "We're trying to reestablish Eastern Tech as a great program and to beat both area rivals in the same day made it even better."

Shackelford, a junior, said the Mavericks' performance can help set the tone for the rest of the season.

"We had a bad loss against Dulaney to start the year so we needed to bounce back in a big way," he said. "No matter what the sport is, if you're at Eastern Tech, you never want to lose to Chesapeake and especially Kenwood. I'm glad we were able to beat both teams on the same day."

Kenwood coach Rob Knudsen said he was frustrated by the scheduling of the match as it came on the same night as a junior varsity tournament. That scheduling conflict led him to hold out five underclassmen that would have normally been utilized in a match of this magnitude.

"We were forced to give up 30 points a match," Knudson said. "It's hard to evaluate how we would have performed if we had all of our available wrestlers."

Chesapeake entered the contest at an even greater disadvantage as it has only one returning starter, sophomore Nate Johnson (130) who scored a pin over Mount Carmel's Troy Sanders.

"We have just four wrestlers with any type of experience," Chesapeake coach Tom Ferrell said. "Still, getting a chance to compete in an event like the East County Challenge is special. You don't usually have four schools this close which makes for a great rivalry."
