Prep Wrestling: Kenwood Takes Fifth at Dundalk Duals

Kenwood finished in fifth place out of nine teams in this past weekend's third annual Dundalk Duals at Dundalk High.

Kenwood went 3-5 overall while western Maryland power Fort Hill won all eight of its matches to take the title. Other county schools participating included Sparrows Point (6-2), Dundalk (3-5) and Patapsco (0-8), which finished third, fifth and ninth, respectively.

Sparrows Point also had one of the best set of individual performances with six wrestlers taking dual tournament titles. Kenwood's Siraj Benu (189) went  7-1 and tied for first for the indivdual title.

“The Fort Hill, Mount Vernon, Sparrows Point matches were great,” said Dundalk head coach Chad Goodnight. “Fort Hill has been so close to winning for three years, it was their time to win.”

The most exciting event of the event came Friday night when Sparrows Point heavyweight Drew Clark career victory. Clark is expected to be featured as Fox 45 Athelete of the Week next week.              

Pointers winning their respective weight classes included Teddy Cadd (135), Shane Hammer (140), Nathan Borkowicz (145), Mike Iman  (171)and James Krug (189) as well as Clark.              

“They are really starting to peak at the right time,” Sparrows Point coach Mike Whisner said. “Mike Iman, 22-1, pulled off the upset of the tournament when he pinned Fort Hill's stud 171-pounder with a headlock in the first period. Mike really stepped up over the weekend. My three seniors – Cody Lewis, Clark, and Iman – are now a combined 65-4.”              

The Dundalk Duals represent the mid-point of the season, and Kenwood, Dundalk and Sparrows Point look to finish strong.               

“We have the Overlea tournament next weekend which will be a great test for our team,” Whisner said. “We also have a re-match with Kenwood Thursday and Baltimore Lutheran on Monday before our big showdown with Dulaney next Thursday. These next two weeks will be a great test for the team.”
