Prep Wrestling: Eastern Tech Places 12th in County Tournament

Owings Mills takes the county crown; Usik is lone Mavericks finalist.

Eastern Tech had high hopes entering the Baltimore County wrestling tournament after advancing to the Class 2A/1A North dual meet region finals earlier this month.

However, two key wrestlers—Chuck Baugher and Stephen Beam—failed to make weight as the Mavericks finished a disappointing 12th place with 64 in the 24-team field at Perry Hall. Ilya Usik (145) was Eastern Tech's lone finalist as he lost 12-1 in a major decision to Owings Mills' Taran Carr.

Owings Mills had four individual champions had won the overall team title with 234.5 points. Hereford placed second with 157.5 points, with Perry Hall (150.5), Sparrows Point (105) and Franklin (103) rounding out the top five. Among the other Essex-Middle River schools, Chesapeake placed 18th with 21 points, while Kenwood finished 20th with 17 points.

Kenwood's Siraj Benu finished fifth after coming in as the No. 2 seed at 189 pounds.

Perry Hall got the partisan crowd rocking early in the finals Saturday night, when Zeke Salvo (103), ranked 18th by the Maryland State Wrestling Association (MSWA), earned a 9-1 major decision over Hereford's Anthony Genco in the 103 pound finals.

“I was kind of intimidated going into it,” Genco said. “We've wrestled each other in junior league and he has kicked my butt every time. Second isn't bad.”

Salvo added: “Genco here is a young, physical wrestler who really works hard. We will see each other a lot over the next couple of years. Winning a county championship was one of my goals going into the season. Now I want to win a regional and state title.”

Fellow Gator Andrew Huber (215) joined Salvo as the only other Perry Hall champion when he caught Overlea's Steve Barner, ranked 13th by the MSWA, in a headlock. Huber threw Barner to his back, and held him there for the pin in just less than a minute.

“It couldn't have happened to a nicer kid,” Gators coach Jake Roche said.  “Noone works harder in the room than Andrew—I am very happy for him.”

Sparrows Point senior Drew Clark (285) knew his team needed a pin going into his finals match against Jonathan Finnerty of Towson. Sparrows Point sat just behind Franklin in the team score.

Clark delivered for his coaches and teammates early in the third period when he turned Finnerty with a brute strength arm bar and held the Towson grappler flat on his back for the pin.
