Prep Wrestling: Eastern Tech Comes Up Short at State Tourney

The Mavericks win three matches, fail to have any wrestlers place in 2A/1A championship.

COLLEGE PARK - Having qualified six wrestlers, Eastern Tech entered the Maryland 2A/1A  state championships on Friday at the University of Maryland with high hopes. But those hopes were dashed, as no Maverick wrestler was able to place.

Eastern Tech finished a disappointing 46th with just six points. Winters Mill won the tournament with 126.5 points, almost 20 points higher than runner-up Owings Mills.

Chuck Baugher (125 pounds) got the Mavericks off to a strong start with a 3-2 decision over Winters Mill's Gunner Cullison in their opening round bout. Things quickly went south for Baugher with a loss to Adam Hefflefinger of Rising Sun in the quarterfinals. Baugher then lost to Christian Vasquez to end his senior season and his high school career.

“I really hoped to place this year,” Baugher said. “But I'm all set to wrestle at Washington and Jefferson (in Pennsylvania) next year.”

Eastern Tech's Stephen Beam (135) also started Friday with a win, scoring a major decision over Amos Harlan. Beam then lost in the quarterfinals to Keith Steine of Winters Mill, the eventual runner-up at 135. Beam's season ended when he lost to Jerry Fumba.

Ilya Usik (145) started off with a loss, but the Maverick rallied to beat Msema Msackyi 4-3 in the consolation preliminaries. Usik's knee gave out on him in his third match and he was unable to defend against Cotoctin's Collin Schildt's cradle.

“He hurt his knee in the regional semi-finals last weekend,” Eastern Tech coach Kevin Cross said. "The other guy just kept cradling that knee. Ilya didn't have enough strength in that leg to stop it.”

Kolten Fodel (130), Dustin Shackleford (140) and Nate Gale (171) all failed to win a match for the Mavericks.
