Prep Wrestling: Eastern Tech Bounces Back at Regions

After a disappointing performance at the county tournament, the Mavericks placed fourth at the 2A/1A North Region tournament with six wrestlers qualifying for the state meet.

Chuck Baugher (125 pounds), Kolten Fodel (130), Ilya Usik (145), Dustin Shackleford(140), Stephen Beam(135) and Nate Gale(171) all qualifed for the state tournament as Eastern Tech took fourth in this weekend's 1A/2A North Regional Championship held at Dundalk.

The Mavericks scored 92.5 points, edging past Lansdowne by half a point. Owings Mills won the tournament with 264 points, double the 131 put up by second-place Sparrows Point.

Eastern Tech's performance came after a disappointing 12th-place showing at the Baltimore County Championships. The top four wrestlers in each weight class in the regional advance to the state meet next week at the University of Maryland.

“Having such a strong room at those light weights makes everyone better," said Eastern Tech coach Kevin Cross of his state qualifiers. "We mix them up as much as possible during practice to keep them fresh.”

Baugher, who failed to make weight in the Baltimore County Championships, lost 6-4 to Adrienne Hazel from Owings Mills, ranked 18th by the MSWA, in the championship match.

“I was one over last week,” said Bauger. “I was really disappointed because 125 was such a strong weight class last week with Matt Swiger (ranked 9th) and Shaun Murphy (ranked 10th).”

Baugher got great position on a single leg shot early and worked for the entire first period to record the first takedown of the match. Hazel reversed the hold and tied the score to end the first period. Hazel took Baugher down twice and was able to score back points in the second period.

The third period saw Baugher take down Hazel but he was unable to score again and lost 11-4.

Due to a knee injury, Usik was unable to compete in what would have been a re-match from last weekend's Baltimore County Championship final against Taran Carr of Owings Mills. Carr got the best of Usik in their first two meetings this season and received the Regional Championship by forfeit.

“I felt something pop in my knee in the semi-finals,” Usik said. “We made the decision to sit out this match and have it looked after by a doctor, rather than risk injuring it more. My goal is to place at states.”

Beam put himself in the state tournament by beating former teammate Teddy Cadd of Sparrows Point in the consolation semifinals and beating Brandon Hoffman of Owings Mills in the consolation finals, taking third.

Shackleford earned his ticket to states with a third-place finish and a victory in the consolation finals over Kyle Beard of Lansdowne.

Gale and Fodel each lost in their consolation finals match to take fourth, still good enough to qualify for states.

Gale lost to Loch Raven's Tony Sok while Fodel came up short against New Town's Royal Churchhill.

Correction: An earlier version of this story reported an incorrect number of Eastern Tech wrestlers that qualified for the state tournament. Patch regrets the error.
