Prep Sports: Kenwood Hall of Famers Return to Their Roots

Former athletic greats will speak at the Essex school with the goal of inspiring current students.

Six recent athletic Hall of Fame inductees from will be on hand Tuesday to address students at the school. Their presence is part of a program being sponsored by the Kenwood High School Athletics Booster Club, the Sports Science Academy and Athletic Department.

"The Hall of Famers will get a lot out of it as well, because they will feel that they're giving back to their school in some way," said Derek Maki, Kenwood's athletic director. "They've wanted to do something to help the school. Some of them already give monetary donations here and there, but this is another way to give back."

The nearly 90-minute assembly will begin at 9:20 a.m. for spring scholar-athletes, during which the panel members will answer questions under the direction of social studies instructor Derek Woodward.

"We hope that the Hall of Famers will give Kenwood athletes and students a sense of their Kenwood heritage," said Shirley Van Zandt, the parent of a Bluebirds' sophomore athlete and an event organizer. "We hope that they inspire them to excel in their schoolwork and sports, as well as provide some fun stories of Kenwood's past."

The speakers will be 1957 graduate Donna Harrold, 1963 alumni Clifton P. Aldrich, Larry Harmel and Edward A. Bailor from the class of 1970, and Jeff Boller from 1976, along with former soccer, basketball and baseball coach Carroll Hess, who also played soccer at the University of Maryland.

"The reason that we started the Kenwood Hall of Fame four years ago was to try to recognize past accomplishments of the great Kenwood athletes," Maki said. "But when we've had our induction ceremonies, I've been very moved, as have a lot of others, by the speeches that were given, and we thought that it was a shame that we couldn't have had more current students there.

"So, that's why we decided to get together with the boosters club and the Sports Science Academy to have an assembly with just our athletes so that they can get a sense of history and some experiences from our Hall of Famers from when they were here at Kenwood."

Maki continued: "It will allow for some interaction between both groups. These are people who are also living and working within the community, so they might be people that some of the kids may know or have heard of, but weren't really aware of all of their accomplishments here at Kenwood."

Kenwood senior offensive and defensive tackle Carl Jamison, who also competes in the shot put and discus in track, said on Monday that he is looking forward to the assembly.

"I figure that they will address a lot of issues, you know, like your role as a student athlete in school, and such as not doing steroids and stuff like being true to the game," said Jamison,  a 6-foot-2, 298 pounder who carred a 3.4 grade average on his most recent report card.

"I'm looking forward to being inspired by the things that they have to say," said Jamison, who has received interest from a number of Division I programs. "I mean, these are Hall of Famers. They were all here long before me. So, they must really know their way around."
