Prep Sports: Eastern Tech Tops Franklin in Softball, 5-4

Mavericks junior catcher Alexis Peay hit a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.

Eastern Tech freshman pitcher Jordan Cargile struck out nine, walked none and gave up seven hits in a 5-4 win over visiting Franklin in nine innings.

Junior catcher Alexis Peay went 2-for-4 with a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the ninth for Eastern Tech, which improved to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Also for the Mavericks, senior Carly Wheat hit a single for a RBI in the bottom of the fifth, while sophomore centerfielder Lindsay Meyers hit a game-tying single in the bottom of the sixth to help send the game into extra innings.

Cargile improved to 5-0 with an ERA of 1.90.

Alex Goodman scored three goals had one assist as the Mavericks improved to 7-4 overall following their 12-3 win over Parkville on Thursday.

Junior attack Hunter Oleszczuk scored three goals, while midfielder Sam Jackson scored twice and midfielder Josh Cannella had a goal and an assist for Eastern Tech, which plays at Catonsville on Friday.

Other scorers for Eastern Tech include C.J. Heckler (1 goal), Corey Vincent (1 goal), Rob Price (1 assist) and Ben Svec (1 assist).

Mavericks goalie C.J. Heckler had two saves in the win.

Kenwood To Host Len Patrick Invitational Track Meet

Eleven area schools are set to compete beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Kenwood in the Len Patrick Invitational Track Meet.

Kenwood track coach Mark Planamente said this will be the largest regular season track meet in the east side in at least 10 years.

Around noon, there will be a short ceremony to recognize Len Patrick's contributions to Kenwood and to officially name the meet in his honor. The longtime teacher and coach died of brain cancer in November.
