Prep Baseball: Kenwood, Eastern Tech, Mount Carmel Still in Championship Hunt

Essex schools come up big in postseason play.

Maryland-bound pitcher Shane Campbell scattered four hits and struck out 10 as upset Perry Hall 6-1 in the Class 4A North baseball quarterfinals.

The host-Gators scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning and had no answer for Campbell after that. The Bluebirds tied the game in the third inning when Anthony Pelekakis stroked an RBI single with two outs to dive in Campbell, who had just doubled.

In the top of the fifth inning, Kenwood's Brandon Hovel led off with a single, Chad Goings then singled to put men on first and second.  In an unusual tactical move, the Gators elected to intentionally walk Campbell to load the bases with no outs.

Mount Carmel Baseball Advances in MIAA "B" Tourney

Senior Ian Arciaga had a double and a home run, senior catcher Mike Krannebitter doubled twice and senior Bobby Sanzone doubled once as part of Monday's 15-hit, 10-7, Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conferece tournament second-round victory by Mount Carmel over Severn at Scardina Park.

Pitcher Evan Covelley earned the win, striking out 11 in seven innings before being releived by Sanzone, who got the save by striking out two more batters.

The visiting Cougars (18-4) led 4-0 after two innings but trailed the Admirals (18-4) 5-4 after the fifth.

Arciaga's seventh-inning, bases-empty home run to right field tied the game at 5-5, sending it into the decisive eighth, where the Cougars out-scored the Admirals, 5-2.

The eighth began with Krannebitter's one-out, double, after which he scored as Zack Pugh beat out an infield hit. Sanzone then doubled to score Pugh and scored on Arciaga's sacrifice fly ball.

That effort was followed by consecutive singles from Evan Covelley and Paul Lagaz that were sandwiched around a pair of walks that accounted for two more runs.

Krannebitter had singled to open the game before stealing second and crossing the plate on Sanzone's single. Arciaga followed Sanzone with a double, after which they both scored on an Covelley's two-run single.

Krannebitter got his first double in the second inning before advanceing to third and scoring on a Sanzone's sacrifice fly ball.

But the Admirals totaled 11 hits of their own, and rallied with a run in the third, followed by a four-run fifth to take the 5-4 lead prior to the Cougars' comeback.

The Cougars play Annapolis Area Christian (16-6) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday  at Joe Cannon Stadium, with the winner advancing to the championship round at Ripken Stadium.

On Tuesday, the Admirals will play host to Glenelg Country School (13-8), while St. Vincent Pallotti (19-12) will play host to Boys Latin (8-14) in elimination games.
