Wrestling: Eastern Tech Takes 6th at Overlea Tourney

The Mavericks had four wrestlers place in the top four and finished with 133 points in the 23-team field over the weekend.

finished tops among the Essex-Middle River schools in this past weekend’s Overlea Invitational Wrestling Tournament.

The Mavericks finished in sixth place with 133 team points, while placed 13th with 64 points while finished in last place with 16 team points in the 23-team field. won the overall team title with 186.5 points.

Among the highlights for Eastern Tech, Stephen Beam won the individual title at 138 pounds while Sam Caravello (113) and Dustin Shackleford (145) took fourth and Nate Gale (170) placed third.

“We had some wrestlers do really well..." Eastern Tech coach Kevin Cross said. “Stephen [Beam] is a natural leader on this team. He has such a natural ability to wrestle, but his mental maturity is second to none.”

Beam came into the tournament seeded first and turned in a dominant performance en route to the title. This included a pin against Kyle Beard from Lansdowne at 1:45 in the quarterfinals followed by a fall at 1:58 of Garrett Coburn.

Beam then took home the crown with a 14-1 major decision in the finals round over Digital Harbor's Ibrahim Sidibe.

“This is my senior year, I'm trying to give it all I've got,” Beam said. “I want to win counties, regionals and states.”

Beam holds an impressive 23-1 record with his only loss coming at the hands of John Carroll's Scott Strappelli, who is ranked second in the state by the Maryland State Wrestling Association. Beam is ranked 22nd.

Among other Essex schools, Kenwood's Nyanbu Farley(160) finished in third and Jordan Boller (170) placed fourth. Chesapeake's Jordan Gale (195) took fourth.
