MCW's Bodyslam Autism Event a Success

Pro wrestling card offers fans a good time while raising money for charity.

Maryland Championship Wrestling returned to The New Green Room on Saturday night, with the MCW Bodyslams Autism event.

Local wrestling fans were treated to an exciting card featuring WWE superstar The Boogeyman against Alexander James as well as a $5,000 bounty match between Pasadena's Ryan McBride and The Bruiser.

But for the card's organizers, the main event wasn't the match, but the opportunity to raise money for Autism Speaks, a charity dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism as well as raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families and society.

The charity has a special place in MCW Commissioner Jimmy “Wiseguy” Cicero's heart, as his two young sons are autistic.

“I'm really happy with tonight's event,” Cicero said. “We donated one dollar for every ticket sold to Autism Speaks, as well as proceeds from T-shirt sales and autograph sales. We are going to be able to cut a big check to Autism Speaks. I really want to thank WBAL channel 11, ABC 2 News and Patch for running .”

The Green Room crowd erupted in a cacophony of cheers as former WWE superstar The Boogeyman was introduced to fight in the fifth match of the evening. He came out in his traditional blood-red face paint wielding worms. The Boogeyman made quick work of a clearly outmatched Alexander James.

The seventh match of the night featured local fan favorite McBride against newly un-retired The Bruiser in a $5,000 bounty match. In order to collect the bounty, The Bruiser needed to injure McBride and end his wrestling career.

The Bruiser ambushed McBride as the Pasadena wrestler came out from behind the curtain, quickly taking control of the younger wrestler, walking him around the ring and bashing him into the ground and fencing, even using a folding chair to strangle McBride. He then threw the clearly injured McBride into the ring where he attempted several times to cover McBride for a pin, but was only able to get two counts.

The Bruiser lifted McBride on top of the turnbuckle and pounded him with punch after punch. Drawing strength from the crowd's cheers, McBride threw several elbows, which knocked The Bruiser to the mat. McBride then showed off his athleticism, flying into the air, tumbling twice, and landing on The Bruiser for the pin.

The next match featured Fed Up against MCW tag team champions The Holy Rollers in a tag team title match. The match was in Fed Up's favor until the referee colluded with the Holy Rollers to give them the win.

After the match, Fed Up's C-Fed grabbed the microphone and called out the Holly Rollers on their cheating ways, asking for one last chance at a title shot.

“If we can't beat you in a fair fight,” C-Fed said, “we will split up and never wrestle as a team again.”

Ramblin' Rich Myers of the Holy Rollers agreed to the match and added that he and partner Earl the Pearl wold retire if they lost. The match will be wrestled as a part of the MCW Shane Shamrock Memorial Cup 11 at The Green Room on July 30.
