MCW Prepares to 'Bodyslam' Autism

Pro wrestler Matt Bowman, known as "Wiseguy" Jimmy Cicero, has become an advocate for autism research after his two sons were both diagnosed with the disorder.

Matt Bowman understands all too well the prevalence of autism in the United States today.

Known by many from his professional wrestling name, "Wiseguy" Jimmy Cicero, Bowman's two sons—Nicky 5, Anthony 3—have both been diagnosed with autism.

Bowman's sons are part of a growing number of young people living with the disorder. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 88 children are diagnosed with autism; a 23 percent increase since 2009. The CDC reports the figures are even worse for boys, where 1 in 54 are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

"Scary statistics, right?" Bowman said. "Yes, but that information means that research is indeed being done."

Bowman continues to take an active role in advocating for more autism funding and research. That is why Bowman will step in the ring tonight at  in Dundalk for Maryland Championship Wrestling's "Bodyslam Autism" card. Proceeds from the card will go to the Washington/Baltimore chapter of Autism Speaks.

Bowman said early diagnosis is the key to ensuring that autistic children live life to the fullest. Both of his sons receive speech and physical therapy and are in preschool for disabled students.

Nicky started out only able to speak one or two words and now can speak more than 100 words and has mastered the art of sarcasm, Bowman said. He added that Anthony still has not spoken and his autism is more severe.

But Bowman is hopeful that through continued therapy, education and love and support from his family, Anthony will be able to make similar strides.

"My kids and many other autistic children may go to the beat of a different song, but our children are beautiful and brother what a beautiful song it is," Bowman said.

MCW owner Dan McDevitt, a Middle River resident, said being able to help Bowman raise awareness for autism is something he takes great pride in and knows local wrestling fans will come out to support them.

"Helping support causes like this is a big reason why MCW is here," McDevitt said. "Wrestling fans are very loyal and passionate and know this is a cause close to our heart."

Along with eight scheduled matches featuring the top stars of MCW, there will also be special autograph sessions featuring Ring of Honor wrestlers Kevin Steen and Steve Corino and along with the "first lady of ROH" and former WWE Diva Maria Kannelis.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the action begins at 7:30 p.m. Go to the Maryland Championship Wrestling site for ticket information.
