Late Chesapeake Lax Coach to be Honored

John Baker, who died in November, will be posthumously inducted into the Essex school's athletic Hall of Fame.

Former Chesapeake boys lacrosse coach John Baker will be posthumously honored during halftime of a Bayhawks' lacrosse game in late April or early May, the school's athletic director, Rod McMillion, said on Monday.

Baker was originally set to be honored this past Friday at halftime of game against , but the event was postponed due to weather concerns.

"We are inducting John into our athletic Hall of Fame, and we will be naming the sports' booster's two scholarships in his honor," McMillion said. "They will be called the John A. Baker Jr. Memorial Scholarships."

In May 2008, Baker, who died in November, earned his 100th career victory three years after being named National Coach of the Year in 2005.

Baker was also named Man of the Year in 2004, 2005 and, 2008, and earned the Gerald J. Carroll Jr. Exemplary Coaching Award in 2006.

Baltimore County named Baker its Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009  while he was in the midst of serving his 15 years as a regional director. He posted a 25-4 record with Chesapeake during that span.

A retired Baltimore City teacher and coach, Baker's Bayhawks were Baltimore County Division III powers. Baker also guided a program at Lake Clifton High in the city prior to beginning his tenure at Chesapeake.


Mavericks Baseball On The March

baseball team is off to a winning start, having triumphed in three straight outings, respectively, over non-division rivals , Western Tech and .

But the Mavericks enter a three-game stretch against their league starting with home contests against Baltimore County rivals and , and ending with Saturday's clash at Hereford.

Eastern Tech competes in the conference of Baltimore County called Division I, one that includes , Dulaney, Franklin, Hereford, Kenwood, and Perry Hall.

Eastern Tech coach Spike McElfish and assistant Ty Whittaker are in their ninth season with the Mavericks, who were Class 2A state champions in 2005 and 2007, and state runners-up in 2003, 2006 and 2009.

This year's Mavericks have vanquished Loch Raven, Western Tech and Overlea by  scores of 5-1, 5-4 in nine innings and 27-4, respectively, despite having only five seniors on their roster.

Only four seniors have played so far for the Mavericks, whose starting lineup boasts eight players batting at .400 or better.

The Mavericks' pitchers have been junior left-hander Chris Hook, junior Neil Westdrop and sophomore Troy Schumuchmann, all of whom are 1-0, with Westdrop earning the difficult victory over Western Tech.

Sophomore Robert Paulus has the team's highest batting average at .750, followed by freshman second baseman Andy Szamski at .615 with a team-high six RBI.

Westdrop is batting .583 with four RBI, while senior infielder/pitcher Tim Heim is batting .571 and junior right fielder Jimmy Szamski is hitting at a .545 clip.

Senior Nick McElfish comes in at .500 with five RBI, senior right fielder Josh Entwhistle has an average of .455 with four RBI, and Hook is at .429.

Schumuchmann and senior right hander Ben Gettier are at .400, with sophomore left fielder Cameron Pullen batting .250 with four RBI.

Sophomore catcher Anthony Pritchard replaced injured senior Rob Barton as the starter at the season's outset after Barton suffered a concussion.

Kenwood Lax Is Back On Track

Jordan Boller scored three times with five assists, Mike McKinney scored four times with three assists, Nick Eliadis contributed a goal and three assists and Billy Weyant scored three times during Monday night's 17-4 victory by the Bluebirds' boys lacrosse team over Randallstown.

Also contributing for (3-2) were Garrett Conn (two goals), while Eric Ulrich, Kevin Dellasantos and Jake Kryglik each had a goal and assist.

The Bluebirds, who led 10-1 at halftime, also received a goal from Kyle Chaillou and one assist each from Nick Boller and Tommy Logue.

Jesse Greifzu won 10 of 11 faceoffs, and Josh Leese made eight saves for the Bluebirds.

Randallstown's Donte Carter was the top scorer with a goal and assist with James Allen, Omar Mcdanal and Jalen Alexander scoring once each. Goalie Brian Garaner registered 15 saves in the loss.
