Kenwood Cross Country Starts Strong

Kenwood boys and girls varsity teams are all unbeaten after having swept Monday's event against Lansdowne, Dundalk and Chesapeake, according to coach Mark Planamente.

Senior Shawn Strasdauskas won the overall meet with a finish in 18 minutes, 46.76 seconds, and junior counterpart Jada Boyd of Kenwood was fourth overall on the girls side with a school record 21:16.08.

Nick Oxendine, Kaitlynn Armstrong and Dayson Broadwater also set personal records, Planamente said.

The Bluebirds were coming off of Saturday's Richard Barnhardt Invitational at Dulaney High, where Strasdauskas was 43rd overall  in 18:16.

Teammates Nathan Burchett (20:58), Andrew Diesenberg (22:52), Jake Hux (23:26), Aaron Brzezinski (24:50), Kevin Delossantos (25:56) and Cory Willems (26:15) were 107th, 121st, 125th, 126th, 128th, and, 129th, respectively. Brzezinski broke a personal record as well.

Eastern Tech Ready for Kenwood

For nearly three quarters, the football team had last year's Class 3A state runner-up on the ropes.

But there are four quarters in a game, and the Mavericks were not able to hold off the Indians in the third one.

Franklin (1-1, 1-0 county play) scored twice for 13 third quarter points in a come-from-behind,

In defeat, the Mavericks' Francis Messally made eight tackles and recovered a fumble, Rashad Smith had six tackles and a sack, Hunter Oleszczuk and Mark Borunda had one sack each, Kyle Bosserman, an interception, and, Daryn Davis a pass deflection.

The Mavericks were Class 2A state title-winners in 2009, their third straight appearance in the championship game. The Mavericks reached last year's semifinals before falling to Middletown.

But a new year brings new challenges as the Mavericks have moved up from Class 2A to Class 3A, forcing the program to face county rivals such as Franklin, last year's Class 3A state runner-up, and Hereford.

Eastern Tech hopes to take out their frustrations from that loss on neighborhood rival Kenwood (0-2), when the two Essex school play at 7 p.m. Friday at CCBC Essex.
