Kenwood Bounces Back After Tough Loss

Bluebirds' boys lacrosse team has outscored opponents 24-3 in its last two wins.

The Kenwood boys lacrosse team did not let a season-opening 7-1 loss on Friday to rival Eastern Tech keep them down.

Since that time, the Bluebirds (2-1) have outscored their opponents 24-3 in wins over Parkville and Western Tech this week. In Wednesday's 7-2 victory over Parkville, sophomore attack Nick Eliadis had four goals and an assist, while junior attack Jordan Boller added three assists.

In addition,  senior attackmen Jake Kryglik and Billy Weyant had a goal and assist each, while midfielder Jesse Greifzu won 9-of-13 faceoffs, Zach Temple had 13 ground balls and goalie Josh Leese had nine saves for Kenwood.

This came two days after Kenwood cruised to a 17-1 victory over Western Tech. Junior midfielder Walt Dolata scored four times with two assists,  Kryglik scored three times with two assists, and Eliadis scored once with two assists for Kenwood in that win.

Scoring twice each were Weyant and senior attack Mike McKinney, with a goal and an assist each from junior attackmen Kevin Dellasantos and Boller, and senior midfielder Nick Boller, and one goal each from senior midfielder Josh Rose, and junior midfielders Garrett Conn and Greifzu.

Contributing one assist each for the Bluebirds were junior midfielders Kyle Chaillou and Nick Oxendine. Leese, a senior, made seven saves for the Bluebirds, who led 12-0 at halftime.

Bluebirds On Track

Kenwood's three-member boys high jump contingent was victorious at last Friday's Baltimore County relays, earning the win with a combined score of 16 feet, 2 inches.

The competitors were Travis Jenkins, Xavier Franklin and Elijah Grant, who cleared 5-10, 5-4 and 5-0, respectively.

On the girls' side, Jada Boyd covered the mile run in a personal best time of 6 minutes, 18 seconds as the Bluebirds out-scored their eastside rivals Chesapeake and Eastern Tech in the event.

In addition, the girls' sprint medley team of Boyd, Alexis Moog, Loreen Nebo and Telema Korkpan eclipsed the school record by 0.5 seconds. Their time of 4:56.6 surpassed a mark that had existed since 1982.

Kenwood's girls are coached by Mark Planamente, and its boys by Jim Roeder.

Angelique Is Able In Defeat

Although her Kenwood girls lacrosse team fell 11-5 on Monday to Baltimore County rival Sparrows Point, Bluebirds' coach Kate Smith had reason for optimism.

"The final score is not indicative of how the game was played. It was 4-3 at the half, with Sparrows Point leading. It was 6-4 with 10 minutes left," said Smith.

"Then they had a couple quick transition goals and we had a big letdown," said Smith. "Last year, this team crushed us, like, 20-1. We played hard and well and sort of struggled at the end."

But the one constant for the Bluebirds was senior captain Angelique Abel, who held the defense strong with what Smith called "an awesome 22 saves."

"She is a key leader on the team, and held the defense strong," Smith said. "This performance is consistent with what she has done in the past."
