Essex Schools Prep for Postseason Play

Drawings announced for MPSSAA public school regional playoffs; Kenwood's Abel to play women's soccer at Point Park.

(UPDATED May 12 at 8:40 a.m.) Neil Westdorp went 2-for-5 with a double, triple and an RBI as Eastern Tech closed out the regular season Tuesday with a 7-5 win over Riverdale Baptist.

This came one day after the Mavericks closed out its county season with an 11-3 win over Perry Hall. In that win, Nick McElfish went 3-for-4 wirh two RBIs and three runs scored.

After heartbreaking loss last week, Eastern Tech High baseball team returned to Perry Hall Monday and posted an 11-3 decision over the Gators. Nick McElfish went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and three runs scored for the Mavericks.

Josh Entwistle and Jimmy Szamski also drove in two runs each for Eastern Tech, which will be the fourth seed in the Class 2A North regional playoffs. The Mavericks will host Edmondson/Westside on Monday.

In other local baseball playoff news, Kenwood is the sixth seed in the Class 4A North region and will play at Perry Hall in a quarterfinal game on Monday,

Boys Lacrosse Playoffs Set

The Chesapeake, Eastern Tech and Kenwood boys lacrosse squads are seeded third, eighth and, 11th, respectively, in their Class 2A-1A North, 3A-2A North and 4A-3A South Regions as this week's playoffs begin on Thursday.

Chesapeake (2-8) received a first-round bye into the quarterfinals, where the Bayhawks will play host to sixth-seeded Baltimore County rival Western Tech (2-9) at noon on Saturday.

Eastern Tech (7-6) has a first-round game and play host to ninth-seeded Aberdeen (1-10) of Harford County at 4 p.m. on Thursday at CCBC Essex.

Kenwood (6-8) has a game at sixth-seeded county rival Parkville (2-10) at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday.

The Eastern Tech-Aberdeen winner will take on three-time Class 3A-2A state champ Hereford (14-1) of Baltimore County, which is the region's No. 1 seed.

Baltimore County's Dulaney (10-5) is the No. 1 seed in the 4A-3A South, and Sparrows Point (11-3) is tops in the 2A-1A North.

Girls Lacrosse Playoffs

The Chesapeake, Eastern Tech and Kenwood teams are seeded fifth, ninth and 10th, respectively, in their Class 2A-1A North, 3A-2A North and 4A-3A South Regions as this week's playoffs start on Thursday.

Chesapeake received a first-round bye into the quarterfinal round against fourth-seeded National Academy Foundation High School on Saturday at a time to be determined.

Eastern Tech visits eighth-seeded Bel Air (5-6) of Harford County at 5 p.m. on Thursday, and Kenwood plays at seventh-seeded Glen Burnie (0-8) of Anne Arundel County at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Dulaney (12-2-1) of Baltimore County is the No. 1 seed in the 4A-3A South, county rival and state runner-up Loch Raven (3-6) is the No. 3 seed in Class 2A-1A North, and state runner-up North Harford (7-6) of Harford County is the fourth seed in 3A-2A North.

Can Bluebirds Lacrosse Boys Bounce Back?

Although the Bluebirds boys lacrosse team is coming off Thursday's 10-8 loss to Baltimore County rival Sparrows Point, coach Tony Ruocco hopes to get back on the winning track during Thursday's game at county rival Parkville.

The game is a rematch of one that was played on March 30, during which the Bluebirds (6-8) handled the Knights (2-10), 7-2.

The Bluebirds entered their loss to Sparrows Point following a 13-1 win over Milford Mill (4-8) on May 3.

In that game, Billy Weyant scored three times with an assist, Nick Eliadis scored four times, Mike McKinney scored once with two assists, and Jordan Boller assisted on three goals.

Additionally, Kevin Dellasantos and Kyle Chaillou contributed one goal and one assist each, Nick Boller and Walt Dolata scored once each, and keeper Jesse Greifzu won seven of 10 faceoffs, and Josh Leese made seven saves.

Mavericks Stay Unbeaten In Softball

Eastern Tech improved to 16-0  following Monday's 5-3 Baltimore County title game triumph over Lansdowne, a team the Mavericks blanked, 2-0, earlier this year.

The Mavericks were 6-0 in league play under coach Jack Meyers, whose squad boasts a talented supporting cast.

Junior centerfielder Alexis Peay was batting .519 with 22 runs scored, five doubles and four home runs.

Junior catcher Ashley Sauerwein was hitting .485, had scored 18 runs, doubled three times and had added two triples.

On the mound, freshman hurler Jordan Cargile finished the regular season with a mark of 10-0, and entered the title game with 53 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.69.

Cargile had contributed at the plate with a .428 batting average, and doubled twice against Lansdowne, during which she was the winning pitcher.

Senior teammate Liz Bondarenko is 6-0 with 29 strikeouts and a 2.45 ERA.

Eastern Tech is the top seed in the Class 2A North Region and will host City in a quarterfinal game on Monday.

Lansdowne is the No. 2 seed in the region and it could face Eastern Tech for a third time in the region final. Lansdowne will host Chesapeake-BC in a quarterfinal game on Monday.

Kenwood is the No. 9 seed in 4A North and will play at Patterson in a first-round game on Thursday.

Kenwood's Abel to Play Soccer at DII Point Park

Kenwood senior girls soccer defender Angie Abel will sign for a partial athletic scholarship to attend Division II Point Park University in Pittsburgh on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the high school's library.

"Angie played defensive center midfield. She started all 16 games," said Kenwood coach Chris Mattern of Abel, who had six goals and seven assists in 2010. "Angie was our captain and leader this season. She is a strong tackler, good communicator and reads the game well."

With Abel in the lineup, the Bluebirds went 11-5, totaling the most wins in a season in the past five years, Mattern said.

The Bluebirds won their first-round playoff game, 12-0, over Baltimore County rival Woodlawn before losing, 5-1, to Thomas Johnson of Frederick County in a game that was tied at 1-1 at halftime.
