Eastern Tech Squads Prepare For Regionals

The Mavericks cheerleading and wrestling teams remain in contention for postseason titles.

Eastern Tech's cheerleading team is hoping to bring home another title Wednesday when it competes in the Northern Regionals at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Westminster High School.

The Mavericks advanced to the regionals by winning the Baltimore County winter cheerleading title Jan. 28 at . In that meet, Eastern Tech bested 23 other county schools and finished with 133.95 points, followed by Hereford (126.35 points) and (122.25).

In all, the top seven teams in the county meet advanced to regionals with , , Patapsco and aso qualifying.

The Northern Regionals will include top schools from Baltimore, Harford, Carroll, and Frederick counties. The top 8 northern division schools will advance to the state cheerleading championships to meet the top five schools from the southern division. States will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Westminster High School.

For , the win in the winter meet came after also capturing the county title in the fall competition. Mavericks coach Missy Wells said her four seniors have provided leadership which has helped turned the team into consistent championship contenders.

Those seniors include Bryanna Ey and Sarah Wilson, who have committed and will be trying out for cheerleading in March. Also, Jessica Siegmann committed to CCBC Dundalk while Ashley Sauerwein committed to Stevenson University and will play softball and cheerleading.  

"These four ladies have the set the standard of excellence," said Wells, who took over the varsity program two years ago. "Their hard work and dedication to this team has been instrumental in our success."  

Wells said the cheerleading team is full of depth thanks to junior varsity coach Stacey Regino helping prepare the new members for the varsity squad.

"I make it point to place responsibility on the athelete not the parents for their schedules," Wells said. "If you ask any girl on my roster who is responsible for you?  They will answer 'I am.'  My job as a varsity coach is to make a strong competitive team and to prepare them to be NCAA stundent atheletes."

Eastern Tech Wrestling in 3A/4A North Region Duals

The Eastern Tech wrestling team will be the fourth seed in the upcoming Class 4A/3A North regional dual meet tournament.

The Mavericks (11-3) will face top-seeded and host-Hereford (14-0) at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The winner will face the winner of No.2 Urbana (14-0) and No. 3 Perry Hall (11-3).

The winner of the regional tournament will move on to compete in Saturday's state dual meet playoffs, set to begin at 1 p.m. at North Point.

For Eastern Tech, this is the second straight year it has made the regional tournament. Last year, the Mavericks qualified for the 2A/1A North playoffs and
