Eastern Tech Out to Close Season on High Note

The Mavericks football team is 1-5 after Friday's 42-18 loss to Perry Hall; Chesapeake remains in playoff contention.

What a difference a year makes.

Last year, Eastern Tech’s football team was pushing toward a second Class 2A state title. But injuries, a tougher schedule and a move to Class 3A, has led the Mavericks down an unfamiliar path. The team is 1-5 following its 42-18 loss Friday against Perry Hall.

“It’s been a difficult season,” coach Marc Mesaros said. “But, the kids continue to play hard and I haven’t seen any quit in any of these players. They are going to play hard until the end.”

Against Perry Hall, running back Francis Massally rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries and had three catches for 26 yards. He has 493 yards rushing on 57 carries this season.

Defensive lineman Nathaniel Gale finished with eight tackles, three sacks, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble in the loss for Eastern Tech, which hosts Towson at 7 p.m. Friday at CCBC Essex.

Chesapeake’s Turnaround Continues in Football

Chesapeake’s football team remains a strong playoff contender after beating eastern Baltimore County rival Dundalk, 22-6, on Saturday.

Running back Pascal Tshiams rushed for 118 yards on 29 carries, completed a pass for 33 yards and had a touchdown in the win. Defensive linemen Andre Carter and Salaam Muhammed led the defense with 5 1/2 tackles each.

The Bayhawks have won four straight after starting the season 0-3. (4-3) remains in second place in the Class 2A North region. Edmondson is in first place in the region with Owings Mills in third and Lake Clifton in fourth. The top four teams in each region qualify for the postseason.

Chesapeake next plays at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dulaney.

Kenwood’s Offense Hangs Tough in Loss

Kenwood’s football team is still in search of its first win following a 60-20 loss Saturday at 2010 Class 3A finalist Franklin.

Senior running back Travis Jenkins continued his strong season as he rushed for 186 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries and had two catches for 32 yards for Kenwood (0-7). 

Also, Bluebird running back Everrett Owens rushed for 91 yards on 18 carries while another running back, Willie Johnson, rushed for 40 yards on seven carries. Kenwood finished with 394 yards in total offense.

Kenwood Keeps Rolling in Girls Soccer

Kenwood has now won three straight matches following its 2-1 victory Tuesday in its home finale against Loch Raven.

The win came one day after the Bluebirds (10-3) defeated , 4-0, in an Eastside Challenge contest. In that match, Pam Critcher, Emjay Fletcher, Brianna Gilliam and Sabrina Banz scored while goalie Katlynn Red recorded five saves. Kenwood has now won 20 games over the last two seasons.

The Bluebirds, who have posted seven shutouts this season, close out the regular season at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday in a non-conference game at .

Bluebirds Cross Country Team ‘Thinks Pink’

All of Kenwood’s coaches and runners will be participating in Sunday’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K run in Hunt Valley.

This run would wrap up a busy couple of weeks for Kenwood’s coaching staff. Assistant coach Jimmy Roeder ran Saturday in the Baltimore Marathon in at time of 4 hours, 31 minutes, 57 seconds.

Kenwood head coach Mark Planamente competed in the 5K and finished in the top 12 percent of the field with a personal record time of 26:07.
