A senior was one of two student-athletes honored with a prestegious award this week.
Kennedy Akwo, along with 's Stephanie Honig, were this year's recipients of the Mildred Murray All-Academic Scholar Athlete awards and scholarships. The recipients received their awards at a ceremony May 29 from Murray and Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston, according to a news release.
Akwo, who competed in indoor and outdoor track and field and soccer at Chesapeake, ranked ninth in a class of 261 and has an unweighted 3.67 GPA. . A National Honor Society member who earned All-Academic team honors in the county, will attend , the release continued.
Honig ranked first in her class of 216 and had a 4.0 unweighted GPA at Pikesville. She was three-sport athlete who competed on the field hockey, indoor track and lacrosse teams in addition to being a Carson Scholar, class historian and member of the National Honor Society. She will attend the University of Virginia in the fall, according to the release.
The Mildred Murray awards are given annually to a female and male senior student-athlete has maintained at least a 3.5 unweighted GPA and participated in at least two varsity sports, according to the release.
According to the release, Murray spent 43 years in Baltimore County Public Schools as a physical education teacher and former coordinator of athletics. She has sponsored this award for the last 25 years, according to the release.
