CCBC Essex Wins 6th Straight Region XX Title

The Knights advance to the NJCAA men's lacrosse national semifinals following their 19-8 win over Howard Community College on Sunday.

 

The CCBC Essex men's lacrosse team captured its sixth straight Region XX title following its 19-8 win over Howard Community College on Sunday at

Sophomore midfielder Neil Hutchinson scored four goals and was named the tournament's Offensive MVP for the Knights (15-2).

After leading just 6-5 at halftime, CCBC Essex—which also received a goal and five assists from freshman attack Ty Kashur—put Sunday's game away by outscoring Howard 13-3 in the second half.

Knights defender () was named the tournament's Defensive MVP while midfielders Rocco Pilliero, Brent Hiken (), Ryan Kissner (C. Milton Wright) and defender Josh Rufolo were named to the Region XX All-Tournament Team.

CCBC Essex will be the third seed in the NJCAA national tournament, set for Saturday and Sunday at Nassau Community College. The Knights will face host- and second-seeded Nassau (14-3), at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12.

The winner of that contest will advance to face the winner of No. 1 Onondaga Community College (15-0) and No. 4. Genesee Community College (15-3) in the national championship game on Sunday.

The Knights lost to 12-8 on March 24 but defeated Genesse 13-11 on April 14. CCBC Essex and Onondaga did not meet in the regular season, but the Knights have lost to them in the last two national title games.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE: CCBC Essex lost to Anne Arundel Community College, 16-5, in the Region XX semifinals.

The Knights finish the season 11-6. Despite the loss, CCBC Essex as it was ranked in the top five in the country for much of the year after having lost 36 straight games heading into the 2012 campaign.

BASEBALL:  CCBC Essex lost to CCBC Dundalk, 8-6, in the Region XX Division II opening round on Sunday. The Knights ended the season with a 21-22 record.
