Boys Lacrosse: Eastern Tech Off to Strong Start

Mavericks hit the road for three games this week after opening the season 2-0.

First-year Eastern Tech coach Tim Scherer couldn't be happier with the Mavericks' boys lacrosse season start. The balance of seniors and underclassmen is off to a 2-0 start.

Junior attackman Hunter Oleszuk leads the Mavericks with six goals, having notched a hat trick in the and Baltimore County nemesis Kenwood, respectively, on March 21, and, on Friday night by scores of 7-6, and 7-1.

First-year starting junior goalie Wyatt Almond has 10 saves in each of the two wins.  Scherer is also pleased with the yeoman effort of players such as senior C.J. Heckler, a reserve goalie who "played some really good defense against Kenwood."

In addition, sophomore attackman Bobby Walsh has totaled five goals, and senior attackman Rob Price has contributed two goals and two assists.

Senior midfielders Joe Terzi, Alex Goodman and Josh Cannella have keyed the transition, finding open attackmen near the crease for easy goals.

In front of Almond, there are shortstick defensive midfielders such as juniors Nickk Breslin-Spinnato and Rich  Diesenberg.

Against North County, Breslin-Spinnato had a game-changing play, "breaking up a clear at the end of the game to give us possession and ultimately seal the win," said Scherer.

"Being a first-year coach, and being 2-0, that's definitely a good start. So far we have never trailed—we have always been up and ahead in the game," Scherer said. "Against North County, the game was tied a couple of times. But we came through and were able to win the game."

The Mavericks played Friday's contest against Kenwood under treacherous conditions, said Scherer.

"Field conditions were very muddy, making ground balls very difficult," Scherer said. "But the offense was still able to play well as a unit."

Man-down defense was crucial against Kenwood for the Mavericks, who overcame numerous penalties.

"Against Kenwood, we went up 5-0 before they scored their first goal, and we went into halftime ahead 5-1. Then we scored two more goals in the third quarter," said Scherer, who credited his Mavericks' defense for its clearing ability.

"Kenwood didn't have too many shots on Almond, but he had a couple of nice, point-blank saves up front," Scherer said. "We're happy with him as a junior and as a first-year varsity player."

The win over is part of the inaugural Eastside Challenge, which includes the Mavericks as well as fellow Essex schools Chesapeake and , a member of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association.

"The day before Easter, on April 23, we will play Mount Carmel and Chesapeake," said Scherer. "So that will wrap our part of the Eastside Challenge."

This week, the Mavericks have three road games at Lansdowne, Owings Mills and, Dulaney, respectively, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
