Boys Basketball: Kenwood Upsets Woodlawn, 74-63

Bluebirds avenge two regular-season losses, advance to 4A North semifinals on Wednesday. Eastern Tech's season ends at Randallstown.

After a shaky ending to its season, Kenwood was determined to bounce back and make its mark in the postseason.

The Bluebirds did just that, defeating Baltimore County power and host Woodlawn, 74-63, in a regional quarterfinal game.

Senior Akeem Echols led Kenwood as he finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Four other Bluebirds also scored in double figures, including junior Travis Jenkins, who scored 11 points and had five steals.

“It was a pretty good team effort,” Kenwood coach Chris Kelly said. “There was no negative energy, and everybody was really positive on the bench.”

Entering the game with a three-game losing streak, Kenwood got off to a quick start, outscoring Woodlawn 24-10 in the first quarter before taking a 30-16 halftime lead.

The offense for both teams picked up in the second half as Kenwood extended the lead to 55-40 after three quarters. Woodlawn outscored Kenwood 23-19 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late.

Woodlawn had won both regular season meetings against Kenwood. Kelly said despite those losses, he believed the Bluebirds had the ability to beat a team like Woodlawn.

“I knew we could compete with them if our guys played the right way, and they did,” Kelly said.
