Basketball: Mixed Results for Essex Teams

Eastern Tech boys, girls advance in playoffs while Chesapeake's season ends; CCBC Essex eliminated from Region XX tourney.

It was a mixed opening round for Essex-area teams in the opening round of the regional boys and girls playoffs over the weekend.

On the boys’ side, Eastern Tech advanced to the Class 2A North quarterfinals with a 59-53 win over Dundalk on Friday. The Mavericks (9-15) now advance to tonight’s 7 p.m. quarterfinals at second-seeded Randallstown.

Also on Friday, Chesapeake’s season ended with a 108-60 defeat at Digital Harbor. The Bayhawks ended their season 6-16.

Kenwood opens its playoff run at 7 p.m.  tonight at second-seeded Woodlawn. After starting out 7-1, Kenwood (11-11) hosted Woodlawn and lost a thrilling 68-66 contest. After dropping three of their next four, Kenwood traveled to Woodlawn, and lost an 89-60 game that was never close.

On the girls’ side, Eastern Tech won its opening round Class 2A North contest  on Friday over Lake Clifton, 56-24. The Mavericks (13-10) next play at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Digital Harbor.

Chesapeake’s season ended with a 45-44 loss at Edmondson. The Bayhawks finished their year with a 5-11 record.

Kenwood opens its playoff run at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when it hosts Dulaney. The Bluebirds (10-9) are hoping the third time is the charm as they have lost to Dulaney twice this season.

Men’s Basketball: CCBC Essex’s Season Comes to an Abrupt End

CCBC Essex came up short in its bid to advance to the NJCAA national tournament as it was upset 74-71 by Baltimore City Community College in the Region XX semifinals on Saturday at Hagerstown Community College.

The Knights finished their season 18-11. The loss also represents the final game for sophomores forward Jordan Benson and guards Greg Hunt, David Ford and Malcolm White.
