wrestling team continued its strong start to the season as it placed sixth in the 19-team Knightmare Invitational on Saturday at Parkville.
Six wrestlers placed for the Mavericks, who finished with 133 points. Loyola won the tournament with 256 points. Owings Mills (194.5), Gilman (172.5), North Carroll (168) and Perry Hall (156) rounded out the top five.
As for Eastern Tech, Stephen Beam led the effort as he won the 138-pound title with a third period pin of Loyola’s Ellis Kent in 5:09. Other Mavericks that placed were Dustin Shackelford (2nd, 145 pounds), Ilya Usik (3rd, 152), Nathaniel Gale (3rd, 170), Mitchell Burns (4th, 195), Sam Caravello (5th, 113).
“This first tournament was a great test for the Mavericks to show that they are in good shape to compete this season, but also to show where they need to improve,” Eastern Tech coach Kevin Cross said. “Each wrestler experienced success and now see their own areas that need improvement, which will be focused on in the days to come.”
Eastern Tech’s showing at the Knightmare Invitational came just days after its season-opening 45-33 victory Thursday at Franklin. In that win, the Mavericks dropped the opening match at 126, but out-slugged Franklin in the end as 11 of the remaining 12 contested weight classes were decided by pin.
Eastern Tech returns to the mat at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday when it hosts .
