Photos: Middleborough Principal Reads From the Roof

Principal Ligeri Kourtesis spent two days this week reading, this one on the roof.

It seems to be the latest trend.

As part of a national contest, Middleborough Elementary School principal Ligeri Kourtesis spent Friday on the school's roof above the library.

The "Read Your Heart Out" challenge, issued by Pizza Hut as part of their BOOK IT! program, dares principals to spend a day this week reading—not necessarily on the roof—for a chance to win 100 copies of the new "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" book for their school's library.

The program, Kourtesis said, serves "to try to get kids to read fiction and non-fiction. I wanted to try to motivate kids to read more."

Technically, Kourtesis said, she got that part out of the way on Wednesday... at ground level, with books suggested to her by students.

She spent Friday camped out on the roof with a camp chair, a "Wimpy Kid" standee and a collection of books from the Jeff Kinney series, reading to classes from her perch throughout the day.

"There's seven books, so I'm going to try to get through the first two or three," she said.
