Kenwood, Eastern Tech Win Holiday Events

Kenwood sweeps Eastside Challenge boys lacrosse games while Eastern Tech captures Franklin Invite in softball.

 

Attackmen Nick Eliadis and Jordan Boller each scored three goals and dished out one assist to lead 's boys lacrosse team to a 11-6 win over rival .  

The win for the Bluebirds (6-1) represented the first over the Mavericks under coach Tony Ruocco and the first since at least the turn of the century. The game was also part of the Eastside Challenge, a year-long athletics competition between the four Essex-area schools, which also includes and .

Also against Eastern Tech, midfielder Jesse Greifzu won 16 out of 18 faceoffs while goalie Ben Runk made 16 saves for Kenwood.

Kenwood's win over Eastern Tech came after the Bluebirds cruised to a 15-3 win over Chesapeake earlier in the day.

In that win, Eliadis scored four goals and assisted on another while Boller finished with three goals and four assists. Greifzu won 8-of-14 faceoffs while Runk had nine saves.

As for Eastern Tech (3-3), it split its two Eastside Challenge games. The Mavericks defeated Mount Carmel, 21-8, in their opening contest.

Eastern Tech Softball: The Mavericks won the Franklin Invitational following wins over host- and Marriotts Ridge on Monday in Reisterstown.

In the first game, Eastern Tech defeated Franklin, 15-3, as senior second baseman Allison Williams went 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run. Also, senior outfielder Alexis Peay went 2-for-5 with five RBIs and freshman Jen January went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Against Marriotts Ridge, Eastern Tech cruised to an 8-2 win, thanks in part to a five-run third inning. Junior Laura Thacker went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the win.

Sophomore pitcher Jordan Cargile picked up complete-game wins in both games for the Mavericks (6-1). Against Franklin, she allowed two runs and seven hits and struck out seven.

Cargile then allowed two runs and six hits and struck out three against Marriotts Ridge. The Mavericks next play at 4 p.m. Thursday at Archbishop Spalding, which is ranked sixth in the Varsity Sports Network Top 20 poll. 

Eastern Tech is ranked fifth in the same poll.
