Four Essex-Middle River Students Named Carson Scholars

Three Eastern Technical High School students are repeat winners in the scholarship program sponsored by Johns Hopkins Hospital pediatric neurosurgeon Benjamin Carson.

Four Essex-Middle River students are amoung the 54 Baltimore County Public Schools students to be named 2013 Carson Scholars by the Carson Scholars Fund.

The fund—named for world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital pediatric neurosurgeon Benjamin Carson and his wife, Candy—recognizes students in grades four through 11 who "demonstrate outstanding achievement and humanitarian qualities,' according to a statement from school system officials.

Each Carson Scholar receives a $1,000 college scholarship, and may reapply for the honor from year to year.

Santina Mitchell, an eighth-grader at Middle River Middle School, is a first-time award winner this year.

Among the county's repeat honorees are Eastern Technical High School senior Seth Fallon, a two-time winner; Eastern Tech junior Jamie Marshall, a two-time winner; and Eastern Tech sophomore Ryan Simpson, a five-time winner.

All Carson Scholars will be honored at a recognition banquet April 7, at Martin's West in Woodlawn. Newscaster Sam Donaldson will serve as master of ceremonies at the event that includes invited honored guests John Mather, an astrophysicist and Nobel Laureate in physics; former Baltimore Ravens kicker Matt Stover; and Emmy Award-winning journalist and television news anchor Chris Wallace.

Ben Carson will deliver the keynote address.

Baltimore County had 13 students receive the award for the first time and 41 students had their awards renewed. The Carson Scholars Fund in total named 425 new 2013 Carson Scholars and renewed the scholarships of an additional 715 students.

To date, the Carson Scholars Fund has awarded over 5,600 scholarships and has scholars in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to the fund's website. To honor this year’s scholars for their excellence, the organization will hold nine regional awards banquets.
