Tuskegee Nurses Seminar at CCBC Essex

CCBC Essex will host a seminar on the history of the African-American nurses that served at Tuskegee Army Air Field (TAAF) during World War II.

The discussion, set to take place from 12:20 to 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 29, will be led by Pia Jordan, a communications professor at Morgan State, whose mother was a member of the Army Nurse Corps during World War II.

While Tuskegee Army Air Field has become synonymous with the Tuskegee Airmen, the elite Black fighter pilots who were trained there, little attention has been paid to the service of their female military nurse pioneers.

Jordan hopes to rectify this omission.

“My mother’s legacy includes my highlighting the contributions of the nurses," Jordan said in a statement. "I have interviewed three of the nurses who actually served on the base where the cadets trained.  They are part of my multi-media documentary.

"You have to keep in mind that these women were professional nurses and officers. Before these military pilot trainees became officers, they were cadets and they saluted the nurses,”
