Essex Soccer Teams Poised for Playoff Push

Eastern Tech, Kenwood, Chesapeake all have strong postseason aspirations.

Several Essex soccer teams have a chance to go far in the regional playoffs, which get underway this week.

On the girls' side, is the top seed in the Class 2A North and will host Lansdowne in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday.

and Kenwood are the fourth and third seeds in the Class 3A and 4A North, respectively. Eastern Tech (11-3) will host Parkville at 5:30 p.m. Friday in a first-round game at CCBC Essex. Kenwood (10-4) gets a first-round bye and hosts the winner of Western-Springbrook at 3:30 p.m.  Tuesday.

Eastern Tech Midfielder said the Mavericks enter the postseason with extra motivation after losing their season finale, 3-1, against Catonsville, a defeat that cost them a berth in the Baltimore County title match. Catonsville went on to lose to Perry Hall in the county championship.

“Can't win them all,” Fernandez said. "But, [after losing to Catonsville] we want to win regionals even more.”

On the boys’ side, Eastern Tech will play at fourth-seeded Digital Harbor at 4 p.m. Friday in a Class 3A North first-round game.

Also, travels to Paint Branch for a Class 4A North first-round contest while Chesapeake plays at Glenelg in a 2A North opening round match on Friday.

Chesapeake Football Wins Again

Chesapeake football keeps on rolling.

The Bayhawks ran their winning streak to five straight following their 36-0 win Saturday over Patapsco.

Chesapeake (5-3) continues to hold on to second place in the Class 2A North standings, just behind Edmondson (5-3) and ahead of Owings Mills (5-3) and Lake Clifton (4-4). The top four teams in each region advance to the postseason.

Against Patapsco, James Piotrowski moved from offensive line to running back and finished with 99 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Also for Chesapeake, James Johnson rushed for 94 yards while Andre Carter rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown and had a 75-yard fumble recovery on defense.

"This game was a sloppy one as far as penalties and substitution errors,” Chesapeake defensive coordinator Bobby Curran said. “We have a lot to work on going into the Dulaney game.

"That being said, our guys stepped up in the absence of some key players and played up to our standards and expectations. We are growing into a very good team."

Eastern Tech Runs Past Towson

Eastern Tech might not be heading to the postseason, but the team is working hard to end the year strong.

Quarterback Kyle Bosserman rushed for 124 yards and running back Francis Massally rushed for 110 yards and four touchdowns as the Mavericks topped Towson, 46-31, on Friday at CCBC Essex. In addition, running back Daryn Davis racked up 120 yards on the ground for the Mavericks, (2-5) who rushed for 405 yards in the win.

Defensive lineman Brandon Jones finished with a team-high eight tackles for Eastern Tech, which next plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Woodlawn.

Kenwood Fares Well at County Championships

Junior Jada Boyd came in 21st overall in the girls race to lead Kenwood girls to a seventh place finish at Saturday’s Baltimore County Cross Country Championship meet at Hereford.

Boyd finished the race in 21 minutes, 24.5 seconds. Qiana Washington-Dow also fared well for the Bluebirds, as she completed the run in a season-best 24:26.6. 

On the boys’ side, Shawn Strasdauskas finished in 50th place with a time of 19:31.9 as Kenwood placed 11th out of 24 teams.

Kenwood coach Mark Planamente was also pleased with the performances of freshmen Dayson Broadwater and sophomore John Boretzky, who finished in 21:01.9 and 21:07.5, respectively.

“Their performances show Kenwood has a bright future ahead with the underclassmen,” Planamente said.

Eastern Tech Field Hockey Advances

The Mavericks defeated Liberty, 1-0, in a Class 3A North opening round game. Eastern Tech advances to the quarterfinals where the team will play at Century at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
