Her poster reads, "This is a test you can't fail" and includes important tips inside boxes: "Know how and when to call 911. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. Test the smoke alarms every month. When a smoke alarm sounds, get out of the house."

Fellow Essex Elementary third-grader Summer Slocum received honorable mention -- $25 and a winner's cup -- for her poster.

It shows smoke pouring from an oven and a girl opening the front door of her house to flee. "Hear a loud beep? Get out of the house!" the poster reads.

This year's theme was "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With."

The Baltimore County Volunteer Firemen's Association and the Baltimore County Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 1311 donated the money for the prizes.
