Essex, Middle River Students Celebrate Reading Month

Mars Estates and Orems elementary schools participate in the March 2013 affair.

March is National Reading Month, and the celebration is getting underway in Essex and Middle River, where elementary school students are hosting two events to hone their skills this week.

From 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, students at Mars Estates Elementary will get a real-world application of their lessons during a trip to the supermarket.

The elementary school's math/reading night is taking place at Food Lion (1565 Hyde Park Road) in Essex. Inside the market, younger students will be given assignments involving shapes, colors, measurements and numbers. More advanced students will work on multiplication and money counting, according to a press release from Baltimore County Public Schools.

While the Essex students are getting lessons in the grocery store, those at Middle River's Orems Elementary School will be curling up with a good book.

For Tuesday's reading night, Orems families are invited to wear their pajamas and bring a few books to school, where students will be treated to cookies and milk/juice while they hunker down with their favorite titles. The theme of this year's event is "Snuggle Up with a Good Book."
